Aw the poor little commie red riding Dixie Chicks are being persecuted by the Big Bad Wolf Vast Right Wing Conspiracy. Instead of playing 15,000 seat arenas they now play 10K and instead of selling 3 million albums they now sell 2 million. Im watching them on Chris Matthews and the poor little millionaire victims are complaining that that they arent getting enough radio air time because of a "mandate" from "corporate headquarters" not to play their records, and in typical liberal fashion fail to mention what corporation is out to get them...just you know the generic evil corporation (or could it be Halliburton???)
Im going to go out on a limb here without any prior Music Industry experience and state that the reason for their demise is twofold....
1. They suck
2. They pissed off their fan base.
Now Ive wasted enough brain cells talking about these broads so I am now going to go do something more constructive and inhale some nitrous oxide.
waaa na na na na na na na na na

Ummmm no Donkeyhue. As usual, you've prematurely especulated.
The corporation is ClearChannel, not halliburton. Clear Channel owns most radio stations as you know and they did in fact have a banned music list. A company memo was made available actually three years ago revealing ClearChannels' practices of banning certain artists. I dont remember them all but went to an event about it featuring the banned artists to draw attention to the music industry manipulations and know the Dixie Chicks were included.
Thats not really sour grapes and paranoia is it?
If 90% or more stations are owned by an entity that wants to discourage your songs, dont you think that this is a valid gripe for a band?
Now I am no fan of the chicks (except "GoodBye Earl"} But..
I am a fan of objectivity. And I-like you- slept at a Holiday InnExpress last night.
You're obviosuly no fan of musical freedom. I'm telling the Zappas.
Are you sure it wasnt Halliburton???
Well thats the beauty of private entreprise now isnt it. If they dont want to play the peeing R Kelly, the pedophiliac Michael Jackson or the un-patriotic Dixie Chicks isnt that their perogative? The point is they can play or not play whoever the F they want, and if it just so happens that they shun the Dixie Chicks to avoid boycotts, fan backlash then boo hoo fuckin hoo for them.
Now if you want to take issue with too much control being in too few hands then you would have a valid argument that I would tend to agree with
Yes, I agree with you Donsky and I make it a point to send money to stations every year like that.
The station I support now is hydropowered and they have also given my concerns alot of airtime. They are a great station, and they even have an open jam segment for musicians to plug their stuff.
Of course they have the right to decide, thats what motivates much of the greed around us. Not just money, but the ability to control, manipulate, shun, whatever.
I am calling for a boycott of both Infinity and Clear Channel until they give the people what they want. Big Dictator 24/7. The Aurora has spoken.
WFMU is da bomb.
