I wish I was surprised, but alas I have long known that the educational system, and educators in particular are an abject failure.

Those that can, do. Those that cant, try to destroy this country.

this kind of reminds me of when i was in high school. when i was running cross country and track we would do pretty well in our league, but we would have one or two head-to-head meets against these powerhouse local teams that consistently won state and in one case national championships.

there really was no reason to have those meets, because they were a waste of the other teams' time, and, uh, kind of humiliated us (no not really, we knew where we stood).

BUT, i think it was a really good experience for us overall ... it kind of made everyone at least try to push it to another level.

hmmm ... now i wish i was still in high school. (although, some people say i still act like i'm in high school, but that's another story altogether.)

Are these people for real?

I mean I've worked in "warm fuzzy" vocations but never did I think it to be a good idea to insulate people from competition or to somehow skew the situations to create unnatural dynamics. Honestly we should seek out challenges, seek out people/situations that push us.

I think that was always a major difference I saw as opposed to my co-workers. I was not one to pity because I don't think ultimately thats very empowering. We talked about this here with affirmative action, quotas, not leaving failing kids back because of the social consequences. And now its a sports issue too.

Sorry but in real life, some win some lose. Some leave us in the dust. What does it teach when we don't hold students accountable?

A major lesson of sports is to teach the ability to accept dissappointment and carry on, not be crushed by it. Doesn't that have value? This is wacked. Changing the way the game is played?

No, its not all about the score blah blah blah. But it is what it is. Competition.

Scores hur self esteem.

I think people should only play cooperative games. Like 'lift the giant parachute' where everyone contributes to the goal. And rain forest jamboree.

We all can be winners! Let's not make children weep from inadequacy.

hey emascuman, nobody said life was going to be a bowl of cherries. and don't forget, i never promised you a rose garden. so no, we cannot all be winners. SOMEBODY has to weep from inadequacy. and it goes without saying: better you than me! ha ha ha !!!

*satanic grin*

so, in closing, if you need further clarification on this subject, please take your issues to the donkey. he makes more people weep from inadequacy in ONE DAY than michael jackson has little boy playmates.
