For the blogosphere. That's right, Al Gore may have invented the internet, but it's Reagan who made it posssible for people like us to have our blogs. How is that you ask? Well thats a good question so let me explain.
It's all about the "Fairness Doctrine" The Fairness Doctrine is a former policy of the FCC. It required broadcast licensees to present controversial issues of public importance, and to present such issues in an honest, equal and balanced manner. Of course print media then and now was free to publish whatever viewpoints they wanted, but because government was regulating electronic media TV and radio were screwed. This all sounds reasonable, however, In 1984, the Supreme Court concluded that the scarcity rationale underlying the doctrine was flawed and that the doctrine was limiting the breadth of public debate.
In 1987 a bill to place the Fairness Doctrine into federal law passed the House by 3 to 1, and the Senate by nearly 2 to 1, but it was vetoed by President Ronald Reagan. If Reagan hadn't vetoed this bill, we wouldn't be able to have any open political discussion on these blogs today. We wouldn't have Rush, or Hannity or Levin, and we probably wouldn't have cable TV, at least not the way we have it today. Oh and we wouldn't have Air America either. (can't win em all)
