So if the illegal immigrants from mexico can use that as a justification, i'm thinking the illegals from guatemala can do the same.
So let's build the damn wall around Mexico, make the Mexicans do the jobs that they won't do and the Americans do the jobs that we won't do...and then let's go into damned Canada to fill in the gaps by having Americans do the jobs that Canadians won't do. Problem solved.

If they're "off the books" it's because the employer is abusing the system and paying someone (immigrant or citizen) without reporting it, and without paying payroll taxes/insurance/soc.sec etc.

That's fine getlive, i also respect hardworking people, but that doesn't mean Americans wouldn't do the job, or work as hard. The truth is, the employers don't hire Americans because Americans would have to make at least minimum wage, plus employers would have to pay taxes etc. So they bypass the laws and hire illegals for pennies.

I did work at McDonalds and the truth is it sucked. Also as far as the Mexican govt', they aren't just passing out pamphlets. They have hired a PR agency and are playing radio commercials in the western states instructing illegals on how to break the law and create lawsuits. They are treading on thin ice as there is already a lot of hostility in Cali, Texas, etc. over this issue. There is a song by Charlie Daniels that describes what happens when Americans unite on an issue...and it ain't pretty for our foes.

Yes, we can get rid of the minimum wage...when monkeys fly out of my butt, get jobs legally and are paid adequately for their work. How do you suggest that we as a society regulate "fair pay" without a minimum wage...and why do illegals and minimum wages have to go together. If we didn't have an immigrant problem, minimum wages wouldn't be a problem. They would be what they are designed to be...fair pay for an equivalent level of work. It just so happens that one killed the other. Minimum wages didn't create the immigrant problem. Prosperity and a wealth of job oppurtunities created the immigration problem. Would you do away with prosperity as well?

Good thanks for answering my question...with another question. I understand why you think it's bad & why you think it's socialist...but how do you propose to regulate fair wages? What would happen if McDonald's decided to pay all of their employees below the rate? No one could say boo and the people who work there would be out of luck as they are already at the lowest rung on the ladder. It's just an example...maybe there is an alternative but you haven't given it to me yet. Just doing away with it summarily isn't really realistic or fair.
I think the argument could be made that at the 'low rung' mcjobs wages would actually increase. Im not smart enough to make that argument, but it could be made none the less.

In a free market, if mcd's drops wages, workers are free to go elsewhere as noone is holding a gun to their heads to flip big macs and if their is no demand for employment at mcds mcds would then be forced by the nature of economics to raise wages to attract employees to their vag oil fry franchise

Once again the media tries to sway the issue. One that is for immigration reform isnt by nature automatically anti-mexican or anti-immigration (although I am an admitted anti-canuckite) as is portrayed, and I get a kick out of the constant point that is made that we are nation of immigrants. First off we are a nation of settlers and conquerors (which rhino did a great post on months back) and secondly yes our growth was enhanced by immigration but by legal immigration. Big frickin difference.

Okay, that's what I meant by a logical answer. I really didn't see how but I guess if McDonald's couldn't just pay out a minimum wage and more Mom & Pops opened, paying better, than they would have to compete for employees more. But that is expecting a lot to happen before it would actually work out for the lower rung job holders. There would have to be other jobs that led them away. By getting rid of minimum wage, would alternative jobs be created? I don't know but it sounds kind of dangerous to assume that it would work our that way and that companies wouldn't just take advantage of paying their employees less...providing less opportunities & less benefits. As bad as McDonald's might be for the environment and as far as being a mind numbingly boring job...they do employ a lot of people and give them a chance to advance.

I also disagree with your argument on the trade imbalance, again the free market would work it all out if it was allowed to. If china is sending cheap goods here, then that means someone is importing that crap, someone here is selling that crap, paying taxes on it here etc. in turn, someone here is fixing it, and someone here could produce a competitive product to get that business if it was feasible.

Well, I was sort of defending that it didn't create or prolong the immigration problem. I just thought it has nothing to do with it in the sense that illegal aliens don't work at McDonalds or anywhere offering minimum or maximum wages.
