Moment of Truth

Moment of Truth is a book by Mark Nuttle. I read it a few years ago and I recalled the following passage last night during a discussion on our current president who I believe is a Marxist. I also believe he's so arrogant that he thinks he is the one who can make Marxism/Socialism work. He's not the first person to think so and he won't be the last. I just wish he was honest about it.

Economist Milton Friedman was testifying before the Senate Judiciary Committee in favor of a national constitutional amendment for a balanced budget. (Ted) Kennedy argued that a requirement for a balanced budget would restrict the federal government's power and its ability to spend – thus, he said, Washington's role in more fairly and equitably distributing wealth, goods and services.

"Senator, socialism hasn't worked in 6,000 years of recorded history ," explained Friedman. "Why won't you give up on it?" Kennedy rose to his feet, and replied: "It hasn't worked in 6,000 years of recorded history because it didn't have me to run it." Jan. 20, 1995

Obama is not a Marxist. He just isn't. You're just deranged.

Oh and by the way my bullshit quote detector is flashing red.

Well then if gary says he's not a marxist then it must be true...ahahahahahaha...

That's a real quote. The fact that you can't find it on google just speaks to the fact that the media bias is alive and well and has been for decades.

Ted Kennedy was one of the most prominent political figures of the twentieth century and had many political enemies. If he said this during a Senate hearing, why is there no C-Span video, no transcript from the Congressional Record, and no other witnesses? I am very skeptical of this quote. Also the guys name is Nuttle.

Ted Kennedy left Mary Jo Kopechne alive in a car underwater where she survived, according to the coroner's report, for up to three hours, while he showered, shaved and sobered up before calling the police and AFTER he called his lawyer.

He got away with that and was a U.S. Senator for the majority of his adult life.

But I digress..... There is a record of it and Mark Nuttle was there. You do know that there are some things in the world that can't be found on google right?

There's a record of this alleged quote? OK produce it. Common sense says that if it existed someone would have produced it by now.

It's in Nuttles book. It's a pretty good book by the way and you could learn from it.

Check it out.

I get that it's in a book. I just don't believe it, absent any documentation.

Ok. Well do you believe that Milton Friedman testified before the Senate Judiciary committee on Jan 20th 1995? If so then find that testimony on C-Span archives and you will know for yourself.

Personally I wouldn't know how to find that and I don't have the time to figure that out. I believe Mark Nuttle is telling the truth.

I am willing to concede that Friedman may have testified before the Senate Judiciary committee. But if Kennedy had said this you are right there would be a record on C-Span or the Congressional Record. You don't think that SOMEONE would have produced documentation in the last 16 years? I believe Nuttle is nuts.

If you know how to find the testimony then you will find the statement.

Let's recall that blogs didn't exist back then, talk radio was basically only Rush, Fox News, Sean Hannity, etc. weren't around. There were much fewer media outlets then in general.

However I'm sure there is a record of it. If you find the testimony you will find the statement.

ok. I took out the book. The footnote says

congressional record:daily digest,january 20,1995,d63-d68

Clearly he didn't just make this stuff up. However if you would like to search out that footnote have a good time.

In any event ted kennedy was a disgrace to his family and his country. He was a murderer and a scumbag. The fact that he was also a socialist was minor compared to his other offenses.

Thank you for digging out that citation which enabled me to find that document. I see no reference to Milton Friedman however:

That's the best I can do for you.

I'm pretty sure that if Nuttle (respected republican strategist) made up the whole thing then one of his opponents would have called him on it.

His book was published in 2008. Plenty of people know how to check these things out and would have crushed him for fabricating something like that.

You're making the same argument I made. Ted Kennedy had many political enemies and someone would have produced documentation by now. There is a record of Milton Friedman's testimony. Let's find it and settle this.

Rhino-itall said...

someone did produce it. Mark Nuttle put it in his book and he footnoted it.

Ted Kennedy thinking socialism is superior to capitalism is a surprise only to you. His moment of brief moment of honesty (he was probably drunk) is the only surprising part.

But the document in the footnote does not contain the quote. Why not cite the document containing Friedman's testimony? By the way, a noted Friedman scholar considers the quote spurious, as do I until you can document it.

Youre right Gary, that doesnt sound like anything Teddy would every say.
