The Power Of Donkservation

When I take a taxi to work, as is customary and the law in New York City, I enter the vehicle via the passenger side door. However, in anticipation of my destination I will shift over to the driver's side to expedite the exit procedure.

and yet....

The driver will always ask me left side or right side.

i think you are expecting too much from the driver. maybe you just like to sit behind the driver because that way he'll take the brunt of it in the case of a head-on collision.. or perhaps you have a man-bag that you need to carry to your right in order to conduct business while in the taxi.

so many scenarios for the driver to ponder. and all that for a lousy $1.00 tip!!

Im left-handed and it's not a man-bag.... it's European.

as a former driver myself, i know that the driver is used to dealing with people who are usually some combination of inattentive and unintelligent.

you're a bit smarter than most (not surprising given that you're a lefty)--rarely do people think ahead like that.
