Taking It Back To The Old School Cuz We Is Old Fools

I recently received an email from an old reader congratulating The Aurora on two years of jackassery. Had no idea, time sure does fly when you're wasting it. As is to be expected we forgot the date and didn't buy anyone flowers or throw a party or anything and truth be told we feel really bad about it.

Seriously baby, We didn't mean to hurt you. So....

We're gonna make it up to you and bring back for a one shot one time only deal... the much loved Original Aurora weekly feature of, yup you guessed it....

......The Mascot of The Week.

For such a celebratory occasion I took it up a notch but unfortunately with the new stricter decency laws we are prohibited from displaying it on the front page as some may deem it offensive, and others very offensive and downright wrong. So without further fanfare..... Happy B-Day Aurorans!

actually, "i write the songs" was written by bruce johnston, a touring member of the beach boys (and full-fledged member beginning in the mid-1970s) in tribute to brian wilson.

the beach boys apparently did live versions of it, but i've never heard one. i imagine it's pretty hilarious. if anyone has a bootleg, let me know.

when it comes to pop musicology, i am, unfortunately, that guy: a know-it-all rock snob.

Yeah i hear ya donsky, i'm the exact same way.

I was speaking to donkey earlier today about Huey Lewis and the News and i said:

Their early work was a little too new wave for my tastes, but when Sports came out in '83, I think they really came into their own, commercial and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost. He's been compared to Elvis Costello, but I think Huey has a far much more bitter, cynical sense of humour.

he got his start as bette midler's piano player when she was playing at all the gay clubs and bathhouses in manhattan.

did huey lewis do that song, you know, "867-5309 ... i got it, i got it ..." ??

NO. And it wasn't Genesis either.

Speaking of Genesis.......

Do you like Phil Collins? I've been a big Genesis fan ever since the release of their 1980 album, Duke. Before that, I really didn't understand any of their work. Too artsy, too intellectual. It was on Duke where Phil Collins' presence became more apparent. I think Invisible Touch was the group's undisputed masterpiece. It's an epic meditation on intangibility

I liked "Invisible Touch." PLUS I liked "Throwing it all Away" and "Follow You Follow Me."

yeah those are good but.....

In Too Deep is the most moving pop song of the 1980s, about monogamy and commitment. The song is extremely uplifting. Their lyrics are as positive and affirmative as anything I've heard in rock.

All this talk about nonsense accomplishes nothing what we need to do is....

...end apartheid for one. And slow down the nuclear arms race, stop terrorism and world hunger. We have to provide food and shelter for the homeless, and oppose racial discrimination and promote civil rights, while also promoting equal rights for women. We have to encourage a return to traditional moral values. Most importantly, we have to promote general social concern and less materialism in young people.
