This is an agreement by people already in the government. There is still an almost total Sunni boycott of the government. A positive step, yes, but a very small one. I will frankly be suprised if the Maliki government is in power much longer. Look for a US puppet government, probably Alahwi, a long-time CIA asset.
The surge is not working. Violence in Baghdad is down to the levels of a year ago, which is an improvement. Violence in the rest of the country is about double what is was a year ago. Overall, violence is up, although not in areas with a massive troop presence.
You are still looking for that light at the end of the tunnel. Do you really think that the insurgents and militias cannot outwait us?
So you KNOW exactly who was involved in this agreement?
The Sunni's are boycotting? Well the article says the leaders of these parties including the Sunni leaders. What are their names? Do they speak for the other Sunnis in the country? Who is the leader who is boycotting? Is there more than one? What are their names?
violence is up around the country? So what is the frequency now and what was it before the surge? Is it thousands of attacks where there used to be dozens? is it hundreds where it used to be ten? Is it 1 or 2 where is used to be none?
So you say the insurgents can outwait us? What is the condition of their forces? How many of them are there? Where are they? How many civilians are helping them? How many of them are dead in the last 6 months? they're not tired? they're not hungry? Can you tell me any of these things? Shit, can you tell me what or who they're fighting for?
You see gary you can't answer these questions because you don't know shit. So let me educate you.
USA = Good Guys
Terrorists = Bad Guys
The bad guys want the power so they can go back to the old ways like when saddam was in power but they can't get the power unless we GIVE IT TO THEM. They can't win a military war, they can't win the hearts and minds of the Iraqi people. The ONLY way they can get the power is if we leave and don't support a democratically elected ally. That's it. I don't know why you don't see that but that is the fact.
We either stand by our ally and help them stabilize the country or we leave and watch the Iranian funded genocide on cable and wait for the emboldened enemy to attack us again.
I find it disturbing that you're rooting for the latter.
Rhino I think you have Gary confused with someone with convictions. You dont think he actually believes his own bullshit do you?
Look at the inconsistencies in his statements.
"A positive step, yes, but a very small one"
He wants to be rational, but just cant let the broken record rhetoric go as he follows with....
"The surge is not working"
Yet readily concedes that...
"Violence in Baghdad is down to the levels of a year ago, which is an improvement."
and more puzzling.....
"Overall, violence is up, although not in areas with a massive troop presence"
So he argues that the surge is working but his mind is so programmed with anti-American jibber jabber and negatviity that he cant even see it, or more troubling perhaps doesnt want to....
Of course if you put a lot of troops in a neighborhood violence will go down, at least temporarily. As for my sources, mostly a careful reading of the news. There was an AP article over the weekend on levels of violence. According to Juan Cole, most Sunnis are still boycotting the government. Maliki is skating on very thin ice. The neocons want him out.
The surge cannot be sustained much past Spring. The Joint Chiefs want to begin lowering troop levels.
Who is the enemy anyway? At a time when we are arming "former" Sunni insurgents, and fighting Shiite militias aligned with the government it is hard to tell.

As predicted from day one, the surge will fail.
So when you say a careful reading of the "news" you're talking about one AP article and an anti war blogger?
Of course you predicted the surge would fail and now that it's working you're sticking to your guns.
You used to say AGW was a sure thing too but now you're starting to see the truth.
Stick around, we're not giving up on you yet.
If the Iraq war does not end disastrously I will admit that I was wrong. If it does, will you?
The surge is not working. The propaganda campaign, however, is having some success.
