A Round For All My Friends

Although we have a long standing adherence of remaining a non-commercialized entity, in other words, we are strictly in this for the chicks not the money, I find myself compelled to make a product endorsement worthy of The Aurora Seal of Approval.

Not since the arrival of the Cash Cab, the removal of the jingoist Kobe beef ban, or the shall remain nameless after midnight four hands for the price of two Korean massage parlor has news rocked the Big Apple like this.....

Duane Reade got a liquor license

Now this may come as somewhat of a surprise considering the self perpetuated image of a raging raving alcoholic, but the truth is that I almost never drink at home. But on the rare occasion that I entertain friends for a ball game, cards or the ever popular Donktacular Karaoke Extravaganza it always pains me spending upwards of ten beans a sixer of swill or even worse considering that I live in the vicinity of a New York's tourist trap zone on the even rarer occasions when hosting fine and fancy matriculated folk it costs damn near twenty (a bottle) for some Trappist bier.

For me this is sacrilege. I have no problem (ok a bit of a problem) paying ten bucks a beer at a bar but, carry-out is sacred and another story altogether.

Well future guests be forewarned, those days are long gone. Going forward I must forgo the patriotic Sam Adams and at eighteen bucks for a thirty pack, bow before the King of Beers.

By my calculations, this should save me approximately one million dollars over the next month.

Duane Reade is selling beer, and this pleases me. Now all they need to do is start stocking the Old Mil 16 Aussies.

If only I had my druthers.....

EE-Aw!!!

rite aid near me has been selling beer since ... well, at least since i moved here in february or so. they all so sell those weird schmirnoff drinkies. not sure exactly what they are. coors lite and "ICE" girl that i am (not).

so i blame rite aid for my most recent slip (tumble, crash, what have you) off the wagon.

You know Sac before they started selling hooch that could have been my blog as I damn near get in a fistfight whenever I go there as it seems to be a haven for the one line for four registers of the world idjits that I relentlessy budge in front of.

But now that they are selling the discount swill, all is forgiven even if I still refuse to join their twisted little card carrying club.

i've started to use the DR exclusively, despite that i have a RiteAid and CVS a few steps closer (all on 8th ave, practically next to each other).

RiteAid doesn't sell cigarettes for some reason, so i boycott them out of principle (though they have been selling beer for years).

and if you think the typical DR staff is incompetent, check out CVS: i think they only hire people who were *fired* from DR. the asst mgr is mildly retarded.

i'm not even being a dick, here--he's actually mildly retarded. just go ahead and try to return something. i dare you.

though CVS definitely has the best in-store radio.

wow. what's your stance on walgreen's?

personally, i always preferred the friendly neighborhood pharmacy (and pharmacist). they really don't exist much any more, although there was one near my old apartment in brooklyn, it was called 'ludwig's' ... on washington avenue. but mostly they've all been driven out by the 'big box' pharmacies. although, when you think about it, DR started out as a friendly neighborhood pharmacy, between duane and reade streets in lower manhattan (unless that's an urban myth ... which i doubt, but i'm open to correction).

No future:

From Wikipedia:Sam Adams (beer)

According to the company's 2006 Annual Report, a possible new brewery in Assonet, Massachusetts, which it estimates would cost between $170 and $210 million, is under consideration. In April 2007, Boston Beer Co. announced that it would begin brewing beer at the Latrobe Brewing plant in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, the facility formerly used to brew Rolling Rock beer.[2]

According to a December 2006 article from SouthCoastToday.com, the once proposed Assonet site is still being considered for a brewery location. The facility would be built in the Campanelli Business Park and would cost an estimated $200 million. The new brewery is also estimated to produce 82 million liters (700,000 barrels) to 117 million liters (1 million barrels) of beer.

--- Assonet, about 10 miles north of my house here, across the Taunton River from where I grew up. Prounouced "Ass Own It". Thanks for reading.

Current annual total production = 159 million liters.

Proposed plant = 100 million liters.

Great.

What I want to know is why I can't drink on the train?

I hate the damn city.

I hate working real hours.

I hate that people need a license to sell stupid beer in the first place.

I hate that nobody challenges the fact that you can get a mortgage, car, or drafted before you can buy beer at DR. How the hell is that?

try moving to long island, new jersey or westchester ... that way you can both "drink on the train" (NJT, LIRR and Metro-North would all go out of business if they didn't let the commuters drink on the trains) AND get out of the city.

i agree, working real hours is a major, major drag. i've been working my own "unreal" hours for the past 10 years and every time i even begin to consider a "real" job (security, benefits, less isolation), i think it would be nice for about three minutes and then the thought of taking a nap in the afternoon knocks me into my senses.

when i was 18, i could drink as well as vote, get a mortgage (i wish) AND get drafted (well, if i was a different gender at the time perhaps i could have ... anyway).

don't have much of an opinion about the licensing to sell beer. seems like a lot of people have them.

well, that's 'anita's wisdom for the day' ... hope it helps.

You know Jew Im going to ignore that you made a weak argument by highlighting a story about a few bible thumpers causing a ruckus compared to the systematic litigious assualt on all things Christian by a pinko commie (from their charter) organization and I will actually defend these wackos, although I will concede they were out of line.

If you ask me we need more hooting and hollering in the hallowed halls of Congress by John and Jane Q Public, and Im surprised that such a seemingly strong supporter of the First Amendment such as yourself would voice your disapproval over your fellow citizens exercising of said right.

More importantly as a citizen concerned with the accountability of my public servants it would be of great concern to me to learn of any fiduciary relationship between Zed and his host, the ethically challenged Harry Reid.

Anita the coppers ordered the Fly and I to pour out our 40's in the Subway Station once (long time ago)..... once! Didnt turn out so well for anyone involved.

...and yes naps do rule, Im taking one now.
