I can't defend the President this time. I have been a supporter, and even when i was critical of him i kept it mostly to myself because i felt there was plenty of people out there already criticizing and i didn't need to pile on. I can't defend him and i can't be quiet this time. Peggy Noonan really hits the nail on the head as usual and i think she deserves a spot here on The Aurora.
What political conservatives and on-the-ground Republicans must understand at this point is that they are not breaking with the White House on immigration. They are not resisting, fighting and thereby setting down a historical marker--"At this point the break became final." That's not what's happening. What conservatives and Republicans must recognize is that the White House has broken with them. What President Bush is doing, and has been doing for some time, is sundering a great political coalition. This is sad, and it holds implications not only for one political party but for the American future. continued

I called it back in 2000 when he first uttered the phrase "compassionate conservatism" that he was a liberal in conservatives clothing and besides the granted significantly important fighting back against terrorism, tax cuts, and judicial appointees unfortunately I have been proven right on too many occasions.
But more importantly Peggy wants me.
Once again I am calling for, as the Circle Jerks would say.....
COUP D'ETAT
COUP D'ETAT
COUP D'ETAT
COUP D'ETAT
thank xenu that peggy has now come around.
i agree, donkey--this guy is NOT a conservative. he's a radical proponent of wild spending and expanding government into every inch of our personal lives.
it's ironic that peggy is leveling the same criticisms that bush's some of liberal opponents have been saying for years.
on another note, i'm playing a solo show tonight at 169 bar, 169 e. broadway, at 8:30 PM.
ron paul for prez ...
I am delighted to see conservatives turning on Bush. Maybe his approval ratings will get down to the single digits. But relax--no need to overthrow the government--he'll be gone in January 2009.
Conservatives haven't turned on him, he has turned on us.
Breaking your Country down? Aren't you the one advocating abandoning the Constitution and replacing our democracy with a military dictatorship?
As for Iraq, I never thought for a minute that the Democrats would actually cut off funding,or set binding conditions on funding, which is about all they could do under our system of government. The far right will eventually try to find a way to blame Iraq on the Democrats, but the American people have already assigned blame where it belongs, on the Bush administration. The surge isn't working, as anyone with half a brain predicted in the first place. We need to negotiate our withdrawal from Iraq but that will have to wait for the next President.
As for the border and illegal immigration: it's a problem, but not a new problem, and it is a manageable problem. There are some 12 million illegals out of a population of 300 million, or so. Deporting them won't happen, for economic reasons. Their presence is probably good for the economy. I do not have all the answers, but we need to secure the borders sufficiently to keep the number of illegals down to a manageable number, and figure out how to best deal with the illegals who are already here.If the far right fringe of the Republican party wishes to commit political suicide over this issue, they are welcome to do so.
Gary you're wrong as usual.
The "surge" is working but not enough. What we should be doing is just wiping mother fuckers out. Stop being careful and kill everybody, that's how you fight a war.
On immigration you're wrong again. It's not just the "far right fringe" of any party that isn't happy with the illegals, it's regular people from both parties. Only big business and lefty one world government types like yourself don't think this is a problem.
The funniest part of that is that you guys hate each other and you're both on the same side of the fence for different reasons. Idiots.
The only thing you said that was correct was that we need to secure the border. We also need to start deporting people for real to send a message. We'll never get all of them but lets make their lives here miserable so that they stop coming.
This is common sense which is always lacking with liberals and politicians in general.
If you reward people for breaking the law, more people will do it.
the other problem with you is your complete lack of historical knowledge. One of the very few mistakes that Reagan made was giving amnesty to the 3 million or so illegals who were in the country 30 years ago, which encouraged more to come and now we have probably 15-20 million or more.
kill everybody? i thought we were liberators...
oh, never mind, it all makes sense to me now: we're liberating them from their corporeal existence!
freeing them for the heavenly awards that await them at the pearly gates!
and all those virgins!
wait--now i'm confused--what am i satirizing again?
anyway, we could solve all of this, as rhino points out, by killing everybody. all we need to do is carve crosses into our bullets and dip them in holy water--now that's what i call a baptism!
Your statement that the surge is working in itself proves that you are a complete idiot.
Therefore, there is no need to take anything you say the least bit seriously.
Cool blog. Love the back and forth here but really nice stuff here. Keep it up.
Bush does what he thinks is right. He is a big supporter of business. His business people have told him they need Mexican workers. So he makes up an immigration bill to suit them.
I still love Bush. I don't have to agree with everything he does, because I am not a liberal and I accept people for who they are. He does not have to toe the party line and agree with me on every little matter for me to respect him. The liberals do not allow one iota of deviation, look what happened to Lieberman.
