What's Good for the Goose....

There's a highschool that has a "day of silence" to show solidarity with the gay students of the world.

Ummm.... Ok. I don't think the highschool administration should get involved in a political protest but maybe that's just my opininon.

Some of the students at this highschool believe that homosexuality is immoral and want to wear t-shirts with a message that says "be happy not gay" but the administration will not allow them to do so.

Now if they didn't allow either one i would have no problem with it, but...

Well I guess the point here is that the courts have repeatedly said that school is not "society" just as one's home is not society and that school personnel are legally like parents. Able to make seemingly irrational/unfair decisions for what they see as "keeping order".

So supposedly free speech does not apply here. Civil liberties do not apply on school grounds as a general given.

Thats why in schools all across America you have Black History displays but you wont see a teacher posting bulletin boards on the KKK. You will see "say no to drugs" but you wont see "pro-legalize pot" events.

Thats just the way it is. There is no legal obligation for a school to be "fair" just as siblings cant go to court if one has a bigger bedroom. Or gets a second biscuit.Tough shit, part of life.

Fair is not part of the legal equation in schools. Or homes. Thats why they can do what they want.

I'm not even arguing with that. I'm just pointing out that its not right. AND if it was the other way around it would be front page and lead story.

But do they allow students to "be gay but not happy" is the question...

On a side note, a school in San Francisco has reportedly redubbed a decade in the early twentieth century as the Fag 20's

Im just saying that there is no presumption of fairness so we dont need to be surprised when we dont find fairness.

If your issue is with the media, and the way its discussed, well, thats not a fair deal ever either and we shouldnt look for it to be.

So its a boo hoo post?

And guess what, the people on the right never talk about the cases the ACLU takes on that further their agenda either. And so it goes.

A quote from a principal today: "The difference is that people dont tend to get beat up or have emotional problems from support or solidarity, but a culture of intolerance is most definitely linked to increased violence and conflict. That often factors into these questions. Not some standard of fairness or equal time."

Not a boo hoo post, just bringing it to your attention.

As to the quote from the principle i say he's a pussy.

Also, if it was a student led thing i would have less of a problem with it because kids are stupid, but it's the administration so it seems they're trying to push their morals on everyone else.
Personally i would spend the whole day telling homo jokes and making as much noise as i could, but that's just me.

Lil stop hiding behind your legalese mumbo jumbo. Its bullshit any way you slice it or define it. The courts, as usual are wrong.

You know damn well that if it was a voluntary religious studies group in question, you would not be taking such a hands off approach.

Being intolerant of others while preaching tolerance, is in my opinion, not only hypocritical, but counter productive.

Let the little queers march or rave or whatever the frick they do I say, but allow those that dissent a voice as well.

...so much for trying to stir up some trouble on a Friday.

The ACLU should file a brief supporting the students with the t-shirts. That's my opinion on this. Free speech. The only reservation I have is that Rhino and I seem to be on the same side here. Troubling.
