That's right, Solipsism! Look it up dummies! (i did)
"Gore and his followers seem to assume that the ideal climate was the one they got used to when they were growing up. When temperatures dropped in the 1970s, there were warnings of an impending ice age. When they rose in the 1990s, there were predictions of disastrous global warming. This is just another example of the solipsism of the baby boom generation, the pampered and much-praised age cohort that believes the world revolves around them and that all past history has become irrelevant."

Your momma can't even spell Dow Jones.
Al Gore and I don't have to look up solipsism.
But speaking of global warming I like this quote from Calling All Wingnuts
"For me, and just about everyone else, we’re forced to accept that we can’t possibly know everything, but when over 10,000 peer-reviewed papers are published and they all point to the same conclusion, well… we trust that the scientists are correct."

Did they say ten thousand???
Well then ten thousand MUST be right.
i have to admit that i enjoyed (and miss) the temperatures of the 70's when i lived at the jersey shore. i would come home from school every day and go ice skating on the shrewsbury river. neighbors had cool bonfires at night and every once in awhile i was able to hitch a ride on somebody's iceboat.
nonetheless, i certainly do not think the world revolves around me. and to think that the groups and individuals concerned about global climate change are being solipsistic is wrong. despite what you think, the majority of these people are concerned about the long-term survival of the planet for their children and their children's children. the big picture has nothing to do with whether or not i can go ice skating in oceanport any more.
an example of people who are being truly solipsistic are a group on the right, the evangelicals, who believe these are 'the last days' and therefore why give any concern about these things because The Lord Savior, Jesus, is coming back to retrieve them (just them) in the Rapture.
i think i've seen this episode before... isn't this the one where meathead's uncle visits and insists on a catholic wedding?
why don't you guys get your heads out of your asses!
THE CLIMATE IS ALWAYS CHANGING! We've had ice ageS (plural) and warming periodS throughout the history of the earth! why is this one different?
There are so many questions that can't be answered that i can't believe anyone would try to claim the discussion is over!
What effect is the increased solar activity having on our climate?
Why is Mars also warming at the same time as us?
Why did the ny slimes call out algores bullshit after he won an oscar?
That last one is just so shocking to me that i had to throw it in there.
Why does algore claim the world is coming to an end if we don't change our habits and then he doesn't change his?
Why are these people so arrogant that they believe they can change the climate???? Are you guys serious?
Even some of the scientists that believe we need to do something admit that Kyoto wouldn't really have any measurable effect on the climate!
of course the climate is and always has been changing. there is nothing we can do about the natural order of things. that's why we had an ice age and that's why (as you keep reminding us) the retreating glaciers created your home base, long island.
but can't you just acknowledge for one minute that human activities have had an effect on change as well?
what are you so stubborn?
and why are you aurorans dragging this subject on and on and on and on and on ..... just admit you are wrong on climate change. and move on.
The reason we drag this on and on Anita, is because that is how science works. I know you want it to be end of discussion, but is that what is in everyones best interest.
Will it make you feel that much better to send third world countries back to the stone age, just to clear your eco conscience?
On something so important, dont you want to be right? Dont you want to make absolutely certain your conlcusion is correct before you start to impose your luddite legislation.
If science be the name of your argument, then let it run its course. Imagine if we were so quick to act during the global cooling scare of the 70's. Wouldnt you feel like a real jackass right about now?
Well fast forward 30 years and be done with your sheepish devotion to this fraud religion.
Thank you donkey.
Anita, i never said we have NO effect on our climate.
Here's the question though that you and your peeps haven't answered.
If we have always had climate change then why is this current warming period different?
The discussion, much to the dismay of algore and his sheeple, is not over and should not be over since there are still legitimate questions from legitimate sources.
rhino, you answered your own question. you acknowledge that human activity HAS had an effect on the climate. that is what makes this situation different than, say, factors that caused other weather changes throughout the history of the planet.
clearly, the extent to which human activity is causing the melting of the polar ice caps, the increase / change in hurricane activity, etc., has not been definitively established, and probably never will. but since even you acknowledge man's role, don't you think we all need to act proactively in reducing carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere?
No, i don't think so.
I believe we must have SOME effect on our climate. I didn't say i believe we are causing global warming.
In fact, i'm not sure that global warming is a bad thing or that we should want to stop it even if we could.
It doesn't make sense that in mans short history on the earth we are all of a sudden the cause of major climate change.
Again, we had MAJOR climate change before man, before the industrial revolution, before suv's, before even algore.
How is it that we are now the CAUSE of climate change?
It defies common sense.
what defies common sense is your willful ignorance.
i'm just going to start calling you archie.
donsky, get your head out of your ass!
So anyway, if i'm ignorant please educate me by simply answering this question.
If man/suv's/factories are the cause of climate change, then how do you explain the FACT that between 200 bc, and 600 ad the earth experienced the "Roman Warming period", and then between 600 to 900 came the cold of the dark ages, and then from 900 to 1300 was the "medeival warming period" and then from 1300 to 1850 we had a "little ice age"?
yes, archie, those are all facts.
now compare the variation in temperatures during the periods you mentioned with the variation we've seen in the last hundred years.
how do you explain that FACT?
archie?
chirp
chirp
Solipsism, the philosophical belief often mistaken for egoism, that one's self is the only thing that can be known with certainty...
I looked it up too and the nuns in grammar school warned us about knowing ourselves. They said it would make us blind.
Is my pal Al gonna go blind? Is that what you are trying to say...I mean, I know he was promoting global warming...but this is just gross. I don't need to know about this!
PS - Global Warming makes Native Americans cry...f'ing pus*%s.
I was at the man gym.
Now get your head out of your ass and
Why don't YOU compare the variations since i don't have any idea what these variations are, and then when you're finished with that, explain to me why you're taking such a short term view.
100 years?
In fact, since you think you know something, break down the temps for the individual centuries during the "Roman warming period" and tell me how much better or worse things are in this last 100 years.
You see you haven't answered my question, you just asked me one. So there you go chirp chirp give it your best shot.
We just had a record cold morning the other morning. When the bay area gets a few degrees warmer I will throw off my oppressive clothes and streak thorugh the library in celebratory glory!
