Immigration

I have said in the past that the most important issue in the presidential race of '08 will be illegal immigration. In fact, The Aurora has done numerous posts on the subject and now that the campaign season has started (very early) we're starting to see that we have been on point from the very begining.
Iraq, and the war on terror in general are huge issues but the lines have already been drawn on that issue. The democrats will call for surrender, and the republicans will preach victory if they want their respective parties nomination. So that's been settled.
Illegal immigration will be the deciding factor, and the nominee who is the strongest on that issue will win the White House. These idiots in Washington have no idea what the average American is thinking, but they're starting to find out now.

On Saturday morning in Des Moines, Mr. Brownback stood for 30 minutes at a breakfast with Republicans as question after question — without exception — was directed at an immigration system that Iowans denounced as failing. “These people are stealing from us,” said Larry Smith, a factory owner from Truro and a member of the central committee of the state Republican Party.
Finally, Mr. Brownback, with a slight smile, inquired, “Any other topics that people want to talk about?”

I've been looking at Brownback's record. He co-sponsored S. 520' which states:

"Notwithstanding any other provision of this chapter, the Supreme Court shall not have jurisdiction to review, by appeal, writ of certiorari, or otherwise, any matter to the extent that relief is sought against an element of Federal, State, or local government, or against an officer of Federal, State, or local government (whether or not acting in official personal capacity), by reason of that element's or officer's acknowledgement of God as the sovereign source of law, liberty, or government."

I particularly object to any candidate attempting to impose his religious view on this country.

Also he may have some ethical issues, in particular his relationship with Triad Management Services.

I will be very suprised if he is the candidate in 2008.

Yes well that has nothing to do with the post. I'm not endorsing Brownback. If you read the article you'll see that this is a big issue in Iowa and the candidates will have to deal with it.

yeah, but brownback is a theocrat nonetheless.

but i think we all know that the most likely course of action is inaction. too many people benefit from the status quo. if anything, we'll see another reagan-like amnesty (something i think all of us oppose).

yes, the glass is still half-empty.

Donsky, this is a major issue for the GOP. The candidates that are the toughest on this issue are the ones that will get the votes from the primary voters, and ultimately will win the white house. If nobody's tough then they leave the door open for the dems.

OK, i am going to make a complete fool of myself and issue the following predictions:

Gore v Guliani Gore wins

or if Gore doesn't run:

Hillary v Guliani , Hillary narrowly wins

or in the unlikely event that Brownback is the candidate:

The Democrats win big.

i have a hard time believing, given the 2006 election (as well as dissatisfaction with bush on some issues), that the evangelical base will tolerate a moderate candidate in 2008. given giuliani's record on abortion and gay rights, i think he has a tough hill to climb to capture the nomination.

i'm not sure the ultimate nominees for either party have declared their intentions, but barring a major world-altering event, the dems would have to screw up pretty bad to lose the presidency in 2008.

my real hope, however, is that bloomberg runs as a 3rd party candidate against hillary and a republican who is not giuliani.

I don't believe the GOP base is evangelical.
I think that's a media distortion. I do however believe that the evangelicals have a great deal of power.

Either way though the candidate that would be approved by ALL parties is DUNCAN HUNTER.

when i say "all parties" i mean all factions of the GOP.
