End Of The Road?

This is a photograph I took in Ireland, and have hanging in my home. Someone once remarked that it was depressing. I find it to be the exact opposite. The way I see it...yes its dark and gloomy and yes the road seems to be coming to an end, but if you look further out you can see the the whole world ahead of you. The again, maybe its because I know that my favorite pub is just down the hill.

i think it's a GORGEOUS photo. so very very evocative and misty. lonely, yet, like you say, the road is open to endless possibilities.

also, it kind of reminds me of the road the two drifters from samuel beckett's play 'waiting for godot' would have been walking down.

just to add to the excitement, here are a couple of my favorite quotes from that play:

Estragon: What about hanging ourselves?
Vladimir: Hmm. It'd give us an erection.
Estragon: (highly excited). An erection!

Vladimir: Well? Shall we go?
Estragon: Yes, let's go. (They do not move.)

Estragon: We are all born mad. Some remain so.

(all of samuel beckett's theatrical works have been put on film in a major collection ... it is GREAT ... highly recommended).

I think I know what you mean. It is very lonely, Anita. Lonely like the person who is always walking, but never gets there. Some people are so convinced of something more they lose all sight to the periphery.

I think that as a metaphor, the vista as terminal objective reminds me of the way people pin their hopes (faith?) that the future is always potentially better- simply because it has to be. There are times where we can't stand for it not to be.

I've always had a tremendous amount of envy for loveless people. Passionless people. The people that just keep walking forever. For some, the best moments are not ahead. They are gone, the rest is a denoument.

PS The erection! Such a funny line!

one thing that has always kept me going, through even the darkest of times, is the absolute belief that if you keep on walking, keep your head up and your mind focused on your goals (personal, professional, whatever) things will always get better. i also believe it's important not to have preconceived notions of what "better" or "happy" would or should be. to be open to all kinds of possibilities ... the trick is to remain strong, and open to "surprises" and honest with oneself. self delusion is a very bad thing.

Surprises freak me out. I still can't believe I come here. So I know something about self delusion, huh?

No matter.

Right down the hill at McCourts!

I was there once when a man rode into the bar on his horse, but thats not the crazy part of it all.... about an hour later they kicked the man out, but let the horse stay.

Looks like Swansea, Mass.

A. A place between my parents' house and Swansea Mall.

B. The geopolitical unit whose Department of Education wrote all the paychecks my pop used to buy books, food, etc.

Nice picture.
