"You know, if you make the most of it, if you study hard and you do your homework, and you make an effort to be smart, you can do well. If you dont, you get stuck in Iraq."
NOT FUNNY
"You know, if you make the most of it, if you study hard and you do your homework, and you make an effort to be smart, you can do well. If you dont, you get stuck in Iraq. Just ask President Bush."
STILL NOT FUNNY
Thats the joke?

Kerry is not a funny guy.
Gary not only is it not funny with the punchline...it still implies our soldiers are stupid.
Actually the punchline was supposed to be: "If you dont, you get us stuck in Iraq. Just ask President Bush."
Still not funny. Our soldiers are not stupid. Anyone who would vote Republican in this election is.
Still not funny.
OK, here it is: the official Kerry apology:
"As a combat veteran, I want to make it clear to anyone in uniform and to their loved ones: my poorly stated joke at a rally was not about, and never intended to refer to any troop.
I sincerely regret that my words were misinterpreted to wrongly imply anything negative about those in uniform, and I personally apologize to any service member, family member, or American who was offended.
It is clear the Republican Party would rather talk about anything but their failed security policy. I don't want my verbal slip to be a diversion from the real issues. I will continue to fight for a change of course to provide real security for our country, and a winning strategy for our troops."
...and I dont believe it for one fuckin second. All we heard in '04 was how this guy was a champion master debater and here he botches his attempt to bash Bush, pretty much his only purpose in life pretty much the only thing we ever hear come from his lips? I say BULLSHIT.
Like every other word that comes out of Bush's mouth isn't utter bullshit.
Like I said earlier to Donkey (AKA Animal Nemesis, I think he should have owned up to this. Whether he misspoke or not, as soon as he said it he should have self corrected.Or something. Damn.
I think Kerry needs to eat this one and apologize. It was wrong.
of course it's not funny. he mangled his punchline, or whatever it was supposed to be. but he did not mean to imply anything negative about the troops. to think that one must be a, to use the aurora word-of-the-day, moron.
i disagree with elizabeth branford. because how many times has george bush mangled and massacred the english language and been given a free pass? countless times. this guy makes one verbal faux pas and he's driven into the soil.
it's disgusting.
Anita you are embarrasing yourself again. You knew what he meant to say? He didnt even know what he meant to say for two days. You and your ilk make me sick. Does everything have to be about interpretations to you people. Sometimes a word and a statement mean what they say. Now pipe down ya moron before I go newklear you.
Until I see physical proof that those words were supposed to be in that speech Im of the mind to take his words for what they said. Hes full of shit. He was reading off a script and youre telling me theres no copies available with the mystery punchline???? Its because its a lie and its spin. Now Im fuckin done with this traitor already.
Thank you John Kerry.
Kerry is hardly the first politician to make a gaffe. Bush mangles the English language on a regular basis. It's all a tempest in a teapot. God I will be glad when this election is over. Kerry said something stupid. Bush is stupid. That's the difference.
Your a fuckin moron Gary.
What you are failing to see is that nobody expects poli's to be perfect we know they make mistakes...it just that dems cant admit when they make them. Its all Bush's fault.
This wasnt a gaffe, he did not botch a joke he did not forget a few words and anyone that thinks so is a jackass. He meant what he said. He thinks that soldiers are poor uneducated suckers.
No, your mothers a moron--for not strangling you at birth.
Good one jackass. You sure told me.
Kerry said he was sorry for insulting the troops and insinuating that they were uneducated slackers. Apology accepted now dont let it happen again.
Lets move on.
Let me say that I am apologize if my remark about your mother was misinterpreted. I meant to call her a two dollar hooker.
What are you, 12 years old? Show some respect for the dead.
Anita,
I simply think that when you misspeak or mangle a punchline you should self correct. If he didnt know that could be taken that way for two days, hes a moron.
That does not mean that Bush gets a free pass, that Bush does not mangle, that kerry meant it the way it sounded, that kerry hates troops, that kerry is the easter bunny...and so on.
Commenting on that does not translate into a statement on Bush and his abuse of language. Apples and oranges.
It means that to most people hearing that remark, it sounded that way. WHO is in Iraq? Bush? No.
See you think one has to be a moron to think that he should have apologized immediately? I say a person is a moron if they think that "in iraq" refers to a person VERY MUCH IN THE US right now.
Putting aside partisan bias, if an average person heard that remark, I think they would see it as directed at the troops since they are the ones IN Iraq. His history etc. dont matter. He should have seen that the remark was mangled and stepped up about it.
If he bumped into me in an elevator, I would expect an "I'm sorry" not days of ranting about how he's not a violent man. Own the mistake, thats all I'm saying.
Lily,
You have restored my faith in humanity. I was beginning to think everyone on the left had lost their mind.
"BEGINNING to think"
wtf?
NOW who's being dishonest??????
Huh?
my point being that you typically seem to indicate that you think that the left, generally, is out of it's mind.
You have a point, they pretty much are.
But this one had me stratching my head. This issue was so clear from the get go it sickened me to hear the left defend it. Absolutely sickened me.
Anyone who defended Kerry on this really should be ashamed of themselves, avoid political discussions and seek pyschiatric help. When the meanings of words lose their actual meaning and interpretive partisan politics dominate their thought process then they are no longer living in the same reality as I and are unworthy of my respect.
Sickening
I'm not ashamed.
Life is all about interpretation. Everyone has a different baseline for understanding and a different belief system. And for most people, both of those things were set in place very (or relatively) early in life by forces over which they had no control.
That is why there is a left and a right. And a center.
It's not sickening. It's what makes life, including politics, interesting.
