Candy For Halloween

In an effort to repair relations between The Aurora and Canada (although we steadfastly stand by our South Park conservative stance of Screw Canada!) we would like to offer a maple branch to our moose loving neighbors to the north by honoring one of their fallen sons. May the era of detente begin.

Coinciding with his birthday of October 31, 1950 we would like to take this opportunity to celebrate (in my opinion) Canada's greatest export....None other than the man himself John Candy. Pound for pound (and that's a lot of tonnage) one of the greatest comedically adept actors to ever walk the planet, a modern day Roscoe Arbuckle if you will, who had the uncanny ability to make the effortless transition from role player to sidekick to leading man. His filmography is so extensive we would be doing him and his work a disservice to mention only a few of his flicks here so what we would like to do is open up the comments section here for our readers to share their favorite John Candy films, moments, quotes, how he changed your life for the better... Heres your chance to tell the world what John Candy meant to you. To start things off I will include one of my favorite quotes...

Holding a copy of Penthouse: "They published my letter. Here it is, "A lesbian no more". They published my letter."

My hands-down favorite John Candy film: Planes, Trains and Automobiles.

....

[waking up after sharing the same bed on the motel]
Neal: Del... Why did you kiss my ear?
Del: Why are you holding my hand?
Neal: [frowns] Where's your other hand?
Del: Between two pillows...
Neal: Those aren't pillows!

I still crack up when I watch it again.

Great choice ladies. I expected this to be a very popular answer, and rightly so.

P, T, & A too w/Uncle Buck his funniest. P,T,& A is more than a comedy. It's a beautiful story about life and what's really important.

Uncle Buck was the first of two collaborations with Macauley Culkin, culminating in the classic cameo in Home Alone as Gus Polinski Polka King of the Midwest(and the Kenosha Kickers)

Yeah, we sold about 623 copies of that.
In Chicago?
No, Sheboygan.
Very big in Sheboygan

Question for you Aurorans:

What do YOU think is it about Canada that it spawns so many comic masters: John Candy, Mike Myers, Martin Short, Michael J. Fox, and so on and so on and so on? Is it the water?

Rhino? Donkeyhue? Gadfly (oh yea, sorry Gadfly, you're no longer an Auroran ... but I assume you are an 'honorary' Auroran non?), Warlike?

Lots of comedians have troubled painful childhood experiences. I am sure the shame and guilt of being Canadian was enough trauma to induce comic aspirations.

The best comedians use real experiences in their material. Canada itself is one big joke! How could comedians from there NOT be funny.

I think it's the sense of, ummm, for lack of a better term, national inferiority (real or imagined); or the "underdog" mentality that causes them to be self-effacing and self-deprecating, both of which are characterists of good comedians.

Plus, I hear that there's not a whole lot to do up in Saskatchawan ... writing comedy routines is probably a good way to pass time.

It may also have something to do with their love of hockey. Growing up as a young canuck lad...those that can play hockey do, and those that cant develop humor as a defense mechanism to avoid beatdowns. Notice the gender gap between male and female Canadian comedians and that most of the male comics are either short or fat.

No takers on which movie my quote in post is from???

it had to be either armed and dangerous, which had the father from american pie and was hilarious, or splash, the mermaid movie with tom hanks and what's her name. By the way, she was hot in that movie, and then i never thought she was hot again. But the father from american pie was always funny and one of his best was the dog show movie.

Splash it was. Another great John Candy line from that movie:

You see, drinking is a matter of algebraic ratio. How drunk you get is caused by the amount of alcohol you consume in relation to your total body weight. You see my point? It's not that you had too much to drink. You're just too skinny.

I've always liked "Delirious"

Candy, Wagner, Burr, Hemingway..Thats a power cast.

That was the genius of Candy, he would be surrounded by all-stars and steal the show. He was the Robert Horry of comedy.

Is Martin Short short, is that just his name?

Rhino-itall said...

I think it's both. he is pretty short, and i think that might be his real name too.

All I know about Martin Short is that hes not a particulary strong swimmer.

I love these guys who when you google them and their IMDB page comes up it says, for example: Movie Star (1).

OK, so there is Page 1 of his prolific career. But google doesn't show Movie Star (2) ...

Somebody's got to write to google and correct that ...

Heres a sleeper... "Only The Lonely" It has a sterotypical racist Irish mother (Maureen O'Hara), the Culkin brothers, Zorba the Greek, the talentless Belushi AND Candy gets to nail a young in her prime Ally Sheedy. A Classic!

I think a JC zombie just "trick or treated" at my door...salute to the only good thing to come from Canada! Happy Halloween Booooo!

Thanks Donk and yes I recall the original post...I appreciate your well wishing and I read you daily, I am just the quiet type...I guess I come out on Holloween!

You didnt mention JC in that last comment. Im afraid Im going to have to ask you to leave.

I’m sorry I’m coming to the discussion late, but is it a coincidence that his initials are JC??? He died for our sins…well, for Donkey’s at least. I think Candy’s best movie was TP&A’s (taking its place as the “It’s a Wonderful Life” for Thanksgiving movies). Although he was great in a small role in Stripes and several other films. "Uncle Buck" was a great role.

Canadians are good people…just poor drivers.

Also…taking nothing away from Chris Farley…he couldn’t carry Candy’s jock strap. Two different leagues my friends

Anonymous said...

Its no coincidence.

Anonymous said...

Small role in Stripes???? I may have to revoke your MAN card.

Seriously. Ill let you google it. Best line in Stripes...by none other than Christ

Anonymous said...

You're parsing my words man...must I define what "small" is. Look, he should have had a more central role...that's all I'm saying. It was small but CRITICAL. Even essential.

JC forgives you for your slight

My late response to Anita is: Canada spawns many great comedians because Canada has the platforms(countless workshops) for the comedians to perfect their craft. There aint shit else to do there.
