Are you fricking kidding me? Am I getting this right that the White House press corp is upset about being left in the dark over President George W. Bush's recent TOP SECRET trip to Iraq. Im sure the new york times would have loved to give al-qaeda a front page heads up on Dubya's travel itinerary, but I dont think in the interest of national security that would have been prudent, not gonna do it. Could you get more petty, the poor babies. I dont think they grasp the concept that their job is to report the news, not be the news. Unfortunately Ive become immune to the negativity of the news, but how about this for an angle...as opposed to denigrating this historic trip as a photo op and stagecraft, heres an interesting take, The POTUS risks life and limb to boost the morale of our troops and show support for our newly elected ally Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki in our ongoing fight on terror...just a thought.
This is the reason subscriptions at major newspapers and viewership of network (and non Fox cable) news continues to suffer. People are tired of only seeing glass half empty stories.

ha ha ha ... donkey, it's not a matter of glass is half empty or glass is half full. it WAS a photo op (albeit TOP SECRET in the planning and execution). and it was a silly one at that.
BUSH:
“We expect an Iraqi government to honor its traditions and its histories and its religious faiths. But we do expect the Iraqi government to honor the right of every man, woman and child to live in a free society.”
...
Uh, i think it’s one or the other. Can't have it both ways, POTUS.
Well you can think its one or the other, but youd be wrong.
no. i would not.
i'm not a policy or religious expert or anything, but it's my understanding is that the islamic 'traditions, histories and religious faiths' place women beneath men. they are not afforded the right to vote, to own property, to be seen as equal to men in the eyes of the law. a free society, hmmm, gives women the vote, the right to own property, as well as the right not to be stoned to death should they transgress in one way or another.
your man is clearly speaking from both sides of his mouth. or else he doesn't know what he's saying, which is the more likely scenario.
There are exceptions. Women have been voting in Turkey for over 60 years, and are accorded equal rights as men. Although by no means perfect, Turkey should be the model for Iraq, as its unrealistic to expect Middle Eastern countries to emulate the USA.
Once again proving my point of liberal negativity...you see the oppresion of women in Saudi Arabia (for example), I see the political contributions of chicks in Turkey.
hmmm. good point.
Good points all but I think the reason less people buy papers and watch less TV could be attributed to computers. People get the news they want when they want it and how they want it. Nielsen is trying to get a handle on computer traffic, DVR, & Tivo but I think it will be harder to measure these types of media than TV or newspapers/magazines.
I am not sure what a liberal president would have said in Bush's shoes. Me thinks it would be sort of the same thing. Hold your tradition but you need to embrace freedom to grow. Simple and succinct...
A phot op where you can be shot is pretty much the definition of war. A place where bombs can drop on you but hey someone might take a picture of your corpse. I don't think there was anything silly or trite about it and it is kind of insulting to say it that way. A silly & trite photo op would be wearing work boots, a hard hat and a Carhart jacket to a plant where real workers work like Joan Kerry did in the last election...The only way you could compare the two is if you let me go to the same plant with a gun and have me shoot off some rounds at Joan.
Well Anita Donkey has a point in that that applies only in certain societies.
Not all Islamic people live that way.
Now they said that the irritation was not with the fact that they were left in the dark but that Bush scheduled a press conference as a diversion at the White House.
I really can't see what else they could do, though. Their priority is security, not what is convenient for the media.
And I think computers, not liberal insanity, is to blame for declining subscriptions.(as gadfly said)
All the paper is wasteful anyway. Good riddance.
i agree with gadfly and lily that computers are probably the *main* reason for the decline in print and broadcast news readership / viewership.
and yes, i understand that *not all islamic people live that way* ... but i think that was the jack-$#&'s point: perhaps the iraqi people (in general) would be flexible enough to look at *how turkey does things* and make some concessions, changes in their systems, etc.. wishful thinking i know. but it's an interesting idea nonetheless. so i still think the animal with large ears still has a point.
joan kerry? oh, i get it. ha ha ha. he he he. but lo, gadfly, off in the darkness i hear a bird trilling: *mission accomplished* ... as elizabeth brandford would likely trill in return: feh!!
also, recall that when we had a democratic president, the RIGHT blew the most ridiculously inconsequental things he, his administration, family, friends, etc., did totally out of proportion ... culminating in an impeachment process that took the country's attention away from the real issues of the country and focused them on blue dresses and blow jobs.
NOW, we have a LEFT who is taking a page from the RIGHT, and blowing some things out of proportion by, for example, having hissy fits over not being informed in time of photo-op trips to baghdad and the president's jokingly questioning a legally blind reporter as to whether he will be 'wearing his shades' while asking his questions.
bottom line, it's all, RIGHT, LEFT or MIDDLE, 'white noise' ... distracting us from the core issues that should matter to every american: the defense of our freedom in all its various permutations. the bush administration's actions (wire tapping, patriot act, etc.) are on the wrong side of freedom. their words and their actions are contradictory. THAT is what the left (and the intelligent members of the right) need to 'focus like a laser' on.
Yeah Anita us conservatives can get carried away with the most ridiculously inconsequental things, you know, things like perjury.
yeah, you do. why is that, may i ask?
