Once again the commie chicken little are running around with their heads cut off, or more appropriately their brains cut out. Its always the same thing with these people when they feel they have been wronged. Its nazi this or fascist that, or McCarthy that or censor this. Which brings me to my point. They are up in arms that a theater in NYC is not going to run a blatantly anti-Semitic play called "My name is Rachel Corrie". To sum up the plot... Israel bad, Palestinian suicide bombers good. Im no theater critic, but it doesnt take Roger Ebert (only critic whose name I know) to realize that aint gonna fly on Broadway. If a private company decides it doesnt want to alienate its customers base i.e lose money and opts not to sell a money losing product, that is not censorship its smart business acumen.
Three years ago Rachel Corrie, a radical activist belonging to the International Solidarity Movement (such a pleasant sounding group) died while protesting the destruction of homes in the Gaza Strip known to have been used by Hamas to smuggle weapons from Egypt. No doubt its a tragedy. A tragedy that a beautiful young idealist was used as a pawn by terrorists. A tragedy that she didnt have the good sense to not sit down in front of a bulldozer whose blade alone is over six feet high. A tragedy that her family has misdirected their grief and are suing Catepillar, the company the makes the bulldozers. If you dont want to get bulldozed, dont sit in front of bulldozers. The ISM claims to be a non-violent organization, however in their mission statement they say...
"we recognize the Palestinian right to resist Israeli violence and occupation via legitimate armed struggle"
...and have been repeatedly linked to Hamas suicide bombers.
As I said its a shame that a young woman died in her prime, but its more of a shame that it happened while defending killers. I know the sixties have been romanticized, and our idealistic youth want to capture a piece of that, but if they want to make the Middle East a better place...wouldnt it make more sense to start with trying to stop the people that strap explosives onto their person and murder innocents?

Sound advice there donkey.
I think it's a shame that this woman was killed, but then again, she sat down in front of a bulldozer, and she supported a group that promotes terrorism.
Play with fire.....
Gee maybe neither approach is helpful for the situation over there.. Yes of course we want people to stop strapping themselves to bombs and of course we want people to avoid protesting in front of a Caterpillar. I am not a defender of Hamas by any stretch or a defender of killers. But there needs to be something else here. A peace plan that actually considers the people not the positional power of the leaders at the table whose concern is to maintain that power and impede the peace process.
I'm curious though why you have to dredge up your laundry list of liberal stereotypes every time you make a post? Is there a shortcut key on your keyboard for 'left wing communist'? Whats your obsession? Mama dress you in batik and put beads in your hair? Don't resort to that, Donkeyhue. Don't make Gadfly quote Stuart Smalley.
Now like it or not, as I follow the story of this particular production I have to agree that a production company has the right to determine their line up, the dilemma with these artsy controversies comes when we talk about public money as with the NEA. (art fund not teacher's union, don't get back to hee hawing on that again)
Yes, she was controversial but we can't tell them what to do. This is sadly the reality of things. Look at how tv bends to advertisers? The arts community caters to their patrons. Without them, they dry up. No big secret.
So is it about censorship, autonomy, protest, what?
What's batik?
I find it mildy amusing Lily that you would take issue my choice of words, yet barely make a peep on your own blogs when the same tactics are used. Now thats curious.
The only difference that I can tell is that when I use them they are accurate and fitting , or used in jest to make a point of the senseless name calling of the left.
Would you disagree that she was an activist? Would you argue my point that someone knowingly putting themselves in harms way might be considered a radical? As far as commie, I just like the sound of it, but then again Sen Joe McCarthy was my Grandfathers cousin, so I guess it just runs in la famiglia.
Donkeyhue, Roger Ebert is a film critic, not a theater critic.
Which is neither here nor there.
But I think the beauty of it all (if there is any to be found here) is the ability of art and literature to cause people to think and ask just the very questions you have asked in your post.
I don't need to tell you that it is amazingly complex. And I'm all for the mounting of plays that show both sides of the story.
You have any leftover batik?
theater film its all the same (thick scottish accent) Crrap
See thats the thing, I have said something about the senseless use of name slinging on my blogs but its not really my job to monitor people, only to address it one on one. When I was told to delete all comments from you, I addressed the fact that we often behave the same way. In fact that sentiment is still sobbing in a few comment threads over there.
What liberals do or don't do is not for me to keep track of. I am not their leader. I am nobody's Tipper Gore.
And actually my recent post on Bennish discusses the inaccurate use of labels by wingnutty Rush-kissing thumpers.
I think your particular trouble is you spend more time linking actions to 'the ever present left' than is really necessary.
And batik is a type of fabric, dyed. Hippie garb.
Batik clashes with my Kenneth Cole and Kate Spade bag...
You say:
I think your particular trouble is you spend more time linking actions to 'the ever present left' than is really necessary
I know you would like that because god bless your soul you are an idealist that dont like to admit that there is an ugliness on the left.
When radical commies stop doing extremist pinko commie things I will stop commie bashing. Until then, you keep setting em up and Ill keep knocking em down
When will the world learn from Cartman? These hippies are dangerous.
Actually Lily my mother passed away giving birth to me. You can be so insensitive sometimes.
When have I ever not admitted to an ugliness on the left? We have plenty of issues, you don't pay attention to what I say I guess.
And orphanhue, I am truly sorry. Thats terrible. I should perhaps refrain from making jokes over here as I am obviously very insensitive. I will not mock your personal details I know nothing about again. So help me Hendrix.
jews and palestinians are both full of shit. I am not able to support either agenda based on the tactics they use to maintain their power base.
But if some young activist wants to roll the dice and sit in front of a large moving object that can crush her in a NY minute..you go girl!
Hopefully she was aware of the fact that she could die.Perhaps she wanted to push the envelope..no one will ever know wtf she was thinking and why...but it makes for great drama doesn't it?
As someone who took part in many Vietnam war protests I can look back now and say: You dipshit, you could of been killed or maimed for the rest of your life! Actually I was maimed..my back has two blown dics I can thank a Santa Barbara cop for. He really enjoyed beating the shit out of me with that billy club..he was smiling the whole time..
But at the time, I did not care. I was wiling to die to make a statement..Stupid? yes... Emotional? hell yes..well thought out? nope..
You let us know the name of that pig and we'll take it from there
