Port Fiction

As the resident former Teamster (kinda like the "former Republicans" that call into talk radio) who worked the docks of Port Newark (so I must be an expert on the shipping industry), its probaly time I weigh in on the Dubai Dubya debacle. This flies smack in the face of exactly whats wrong with our country. We are run by a gaggle of frickin idiots. Just because something can be done doesnt necessarily mean it should be done. Now I dont know all the facts, and as far I know this company may very well be the best people for the job and productivity could be increased, but sometimes the bottom line should not be the bottom line. Common sense needs to prevail. Patrick Buchanan made the point tonight that when Patriotism comes to a head against Globalism, the latter should be thrown out the window, is that so difficult to grasp. This isnt a matter of being anti-Arab xenophobic isolationists, this is a matter of wanting Americans to handle such an integral part of our national security. Is that so horrible? If you want to know the truth, Im upset to learn that they were being run by a British Co. as well, but to insinuate that there is no difference between the two, as Bush foolish and childishly did is equivalent to comparing apples and grenades. George better smarten up real quick or hes going to hand the Dems Congress in '06, and if he dusts off his veto pen on this issue, he'll hand the White House over as well in '08. I cant help but to recall Papa Bush's speech declaring a New World Order, and if it entails handing over our ports, where does it end? Do we outsource our border security to the Mexican Army next? Or let Canada take over our breweries? (ok maybe not a horrible idea) On parting I would like to offer my advice to George, but in the words of Marsellus Wallace:

The night of the fight, you may feel a slight sting. That's pride fucking with you. Fuck pride. Pride only hurts, it never helps.

So back down George, a bitter pill to swallow, no doubt but if you go to the mat on this one you will lose, because you are wrong no matter your reasoning or logic. UAE may be valueable to you strategically but I think theyll get over it. You went through this with Harriet Myers, and you did the right thing and were able to walk away with only a couple of flesh wounds, so take your lumps and move on.

Well said donkey. the good thing is that the rhetoric about vetos and such has calmed down, and the whitehouse last night said a "delay" to let congress get "more comfortable" with the deal would be OK.
I think this deal will go down in flames.

Didn't Clinton have a chance to kill Osama but he held off because there was a convoy from the Arab Emirates nearby his camp...I wonder who their lobbyist is...He should have to go a few rounds with Marcellus Wallace...find out what it's like to have someone get Medieval on their ass...Anyway, this situation might turn out to be an awakening of sorts and if it is prevented, I'd like to point out that the Aurora was on this one from the get go...good work boys.

This is all about Nat'l Security. Dont kid yourself. Youre going to put your faith in the same people losing the war on drugs (not a whack but a fact, the CG does good work but cant do it alone) If we had a system in place to truly monitor all containers it would make their job easier, and the mgmt co would be less important but until then we need to stack the odds in our favor since it only takes one to get thru to ruin your day. The dems are pandring phonies and once again its apparent to the public. Dont Hillary and Jimmy remember Panama? David Lee Roth Does

Ben i have to disagree for a few reasons.
1. 95% of the containers coming in NOW are not inspected by our security, and the president has assured us they will be inspected on the other end. not very reassuring.

2. even if we continue to do the security, dubai will still have to interface with us on that security. which means they will know all of the intimate details of our procedures.

3. This company is government owned Dubai sheik muhammed is UAE defense minister! in the past he has warned America not to attack "innocent muslims" and to include "Israeli terrorists" in it's war on terror.

How can we trust that this company will do their job and inspect these containers? How do we know if they're NOT part of the terrorist organizations? Wouldn't this make it easier for them to get WMD or even just terrorists into the country? Of course it would. I don't think we can trust them. In fact, like donkey i don't even like the Brits controlling these ports. I'm wondering what other strategic spots are not under U.S. control?

The problem with this Fly is if you threw a rock in DC, youd hit somebody in bed with them the UAE financially. As Diddy says "Its all about the benjamins"

Hell even I got people there. Note to self cancel trip to Dubai.

ben i wish that all you're saying was true, but it's not. The exact same people won't be there. Especially at the top. The owner of the company changes, there will be other changes as well, different managers, different home base, different office people that can put a different work order, or inspection paper in a file where it doesn't belong etc.
To say it's exactly the same is ridiculous. Like donkey said, i don't even want the British controlling this thing, but i think it's a better chance that they wouldn't turn on us than the UAE. We didn't let the chinese buy a major American oil company because we didn't want a sometimes hostile regime having a strategic foothold in our country. How can we say Dubai is any different? It's not a private company buying these ports its the government, and the sheik, who holds telethons for palestinian suicide bombers is defense minister!

Ben its all about the money. You dont find it odd that if true, the POTUS was left in the dark on this one, but Sec Snow pulled the trigger considering his crony Sanborn (now Asst Sec of Trans)and the CSX / Dubai connection.

And as far as the banks are concerned there is a big difference between Chase buying JP Morgan, and Citibank outsourcing their customer service to India, which I violently oppose. Right now India is an ally, but it just dont feel right when "Jim Smith" from New Dheli calls you with your Soc # Bank Acct #, DOB and other vitals. What happens if and when they are not an ally?

If it smells like shit
