Perspective
Thomas Sowell puts this whole wiretapping thing into some perspective for us. Why do we care? What do the critics of the wiretapping think? Do they think the NSA has time to listen to every phone call made in the U.S.? Do they think we shouldn't be tapping the phones of people who are in contact with known terrorists? Do they think we should be telling our enemies that we can listen in to their calls? They have the Attorney General testifying in open session and want to ask stupid ass questions like what else are we doing that the enemy doesn't know about? What is wrong with these idiots? These animals are holding a young American girl and showing her off to the t.v. camera's at al jazeera with guns at her head, while she's crying and begging for her life! By the way, why haven't we bombed the al jazeera network yet? If it was up to me, i would capture everyone at al jazeera who might know anything about where this girl is, and i would torture them until they told me everything they know! Please someone tell me why we're not doing this? Someone give me one good reason why we shouldn't be tapping the phones of ANYONE who might have ANY possible connection to these animals? I don't care who it is, whoever leaked the wiretapping story should be put to death for treason!

Uh, you know I think the terrorists know that we are trying to listen to their phone conversations, and they don't really care if it was done with a warrant or not.
Let me quote a former Reagan conservative Paul Craig Roberts:
ask yourself why President Bush refuses to obey the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act. The purpose of the FISA court is to ensure that administrations do not spy for partisan political reasons. The warrant requirement is to ensure that a panel of independent federal judges hears a legitimate reason for the spying, thus protecting a president from the temptation to abuse the powers of government. The only reason for the Bush administration to evade the court is that the Bush administration had no legitimate reasons for its spying. This should be obvious even to a naif.
Perhaps you trust President Bush (although it is well-documented that they are already spying on liberal groups)but how do you feel about expanded and unchecked executive power in the hands of President Hillary Clinton?
Whatever happened to conservative distrust of government?
hey gary, the president didn't refuse to obey the courts. the courts, and congress have been kept informed the whole way. the program has been RE AUTHORIZED numerous times. if the president was using this for political reasons the senate intelligence comittee (dems and republicans) would know about it. you should read the sowell peice, it really does put it into perspective.
OK, I read what Sowell had to say. He writes: "Precious time can be wasted filing legalistic documents." This is really bullshit. The FISA Law, as you must know, allows warrants after-the-fact.
We are not talking paperwork here, we are talking rule of law.
gary, go back and read my post on jan 31. there's a link in there Not That Simple..... It's not that simple. Besides, who cares? Are you afraid that the government wants to hear what you have to say??? they don't care..... much like all the women you meet, they're not interested in you...... just kidding, i'm sure you're a lady killer, but i couldn't resist.
Rhinoculous, they are already spying on Peace Groups. Taking photographs, infiltrating them, taking down license numbers. This is a waste of time and money that could be put to better use fighting terrorists.
I would be amazed if these policies you are defending are not already being abused.
gary i don't know about any spying on peace groups, and i don't care. If your number is in osama's cell phone you lose your right to privacy. that's it. If they want to abuse it i don't think any court will stop them anyway. besides i don't like these peace groups... can't trust anyone who's against killin...... just ain't right.
While I will concur with you Gary as far the feebleness of gov't, I dont distrust them per se I just dont trust them to be competent. However in this situation it is certainly wiser to err on the side of caution. As Sowell pointed out in his article and I did as well in my drunken post last week "Here Fido" the media and the liberals are turning this into something that it aint. They are using scaremongering tactics strictly for political gain and to launch baseless attacks against the President. Did you hear Leahy asking Gonz about opening first class envelopes??? Didnt he hear that this was a computer program tagging hot words and catch phrases, of course he did but hes avoiding facts to grandstand. I am convinced they will not be happy until we are attacked again, and until the eventual destruction of this country for it is apparent with their words and actions that they hate The United States Of America.
On spying on peace groups: It is going on and they are not in touch with Al Qaeda. See my blog for a few examples.
http://coverthistory.blogspot.com/2006/02/why-do-they-always-go-after-peace.html
They are infiltrating and spying on peaceful left-of-center groups, including the Catholic Workers, Quaker groups, Vegans, anti-war groups.
Gary, with all due respect, your blog statement says that you're a "conspiracy realist" I have a little trouble taking your information seriously. I don't want you to take it personally, the donkey is a conspiracy guy too, but i'm just not down with that.
Gary, this is your source?
The Baltimore Pledge of Resistance is part of the national Iraq Pledge of Resistance, which works with the Baltimore Emergency Response Network and the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) --
Sorry, i'm going with my president on this one.
By "conspiracy realist" I mean I believe in genuine conspiracies (like the conspiracy to invade Iraq, or Iran/Contra or the Kennedy assassination) not imagined Masonic/Illuminati/CFR conspiracy nonsense.
I also don't understand rhinoculous' last comment. The American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) is certainly not a terrorist group. You may not agree with them, probably don't, but don't you think spying on them is a waste of time and money that could be better used going after, well, real terrorists?
Also, to be fair, may I assume that you would not have a problem with President Hillary going after rightwing groups?
You dont remember that President Hillary already did. She/They used their position to sick every agency under them on their whim, whether it was the IRS, CIA, FBI, and HUSTLER. Do you really forget the onslaught of media and govermenental machinations that they controlled. Jennifer Flowers was disgrace not for banging the President, that made Monica famous. Ms Flowers was disgraced slandered and villiefied for being a woman that had the misfortune of banging the wrong guy. Right wing conspiracy?...Bubba was s still a Gov/nominee and they destroyed that poor girls life for telling the truth. But then again he never had sexua....
forget flowers, what about what they did to juanita broderick.
And gary, just because they say they're peaceful doesn't mean that they are. You know Islam is the religion of peace.........except when they're rioting and flying planes into buildings. Yes i would have a problem with hillary spying on right wing groups, but not the ones that blew up the federal building in oklahoma.
This might surprise you but I agree with most of what you said about Hilary. Also, when Bill said that he did not have sexual relations with Monica I did not believe him for a minute.A good rule of thumb on political sex scandals (I call it Buells Law) is this: If a prominent male political figure is accused of some sort of sexual impropriety: HE DID IT. You won't be wrong very often. Bill Clinton, Clarence Thomas, whoever.
So rhinoculous, you are OK with spying on righwing terrorists but not peacefull rightwing groups. How about the same standard for leftwing groups? The Quakers haven't bombed anybody yet.
