"I will speak today about issues arising from the Queer Film Festival and the Vagina Monologues. I will speak not only about these particular events, but also about the deeper issues they raise regarding academic freedom and our character as a Catholic university. Whatever one thinks about these two events, few issues are more important for this community than these. Today and in the discussion of coming weeks we seek above all the deeper principles that take account of academic freedom and our Catholic character–the principles that guide decisions not only about the events currently at issue, but also about others in the future" Rev John I Jenkins, President, University of Notre Dame
I have no problem with Vaginas or Homosexuals having the freedom to express themselves in any non-violent (violent vaginas will be addressed on my Honeymoon diary post t.b.a) manner they see fit, but since when does a Catholic University have to defend its Catholicism? Arent they entitled to the same freedom of expression, even if that means they oppose promiscuous pre-marital sex and homosexuality and would prefer to not condone it on their Catholic campus, isnt that their "right". Seems to me to be yet another example of the double standard that exists with our "freedoms". Im not gonna sit here and cry about how Christians are being persecuted by the liberal global-secularists, (because two things promoting the social ills in this country in my mind are the "victimization complex" and the "warhol syndrome"...another post another day) Noone seems to mind Catholics when they are doing Catholic things like running schools, hospitals, shelters...coincidence that education, healthcare, and social services are "so called" democratic platforms, but when it comes to their Catholic pro-life, anti same sex marriage, and other "so called" socially 'conservative' or 'Republican' issues that is when there seems to be problem. Makes you think.
Full disclosure: This post was brought to you by a non practicing sinning Catholic school educated former Catholic, and one of the very few Irish sports fan that hates ND.

ah the old left wing double standard...as dylan said, c. 1963, "i'm liberal but to a degree, want everybody to be free, but if you think i'll let barry goldwater move in next door and marry my daughter, you must think i'm crazy! (wouldn't let him do it for all the farms in cuba!) some things never change. sorry, no priest jokes from this "collapsed" catholic...
An 80 year old man went into the confessional and told the priest the following:
"Father, I am an 80 year old man, I'm married, I have 4 children and 11 grandchildren. Last night I strayed and had an affair with two 18 year old girls. We partied and made love all night long."
The priest said, "My son, when was the last time you were at confession?"
The old man said, "I have never been to confession, I'm Jewish."
The priest said, "Then why are you here telling me this?"
The old man said, "Father, I'm telling everyone!"
