U.S. government shuts Cuba out of World Baseball Classic
I've been sick as a dog lately and I still am but this made me more sick...to my stomach so I had to say something about it. What good does shutting the Cubans out of a baseball series do? For that matter, if Bush and our federal government is concerned about their image (i.e. they just hired PR people to help make us look better globally) then why would we shut the Cubans out? Are they some sort of threat to national security? This is just ridiculous and I know how much everyone hates this "label" but it makes us look like Nazi's and Hitler walking out of the Olympics when Jesse Owens dominated the Olympics in Germany. Cuba has produced some of the best ball players in the world and all this does is make us look like we are afraid to play them or simply just incapable of compassion. What did the Cuban baseball team do to America? If anything it gives some of the Cuban baseball players a chance to escape ala Rey Ordonez jumping a fence in Miami during a similar exhibition. And why can they come and play the Baltimore Orioles but not play Internationally with the US team involved. It makes no sense. It reeks of just sheer stupidity and I am embarrassed to be in any way associated with our governement today. They should be ashamed of themselves and we should be ashamed of them.

Is it really that big of a deal that you're embarrassed of our government? Who cares about international baseball tournaments anyway? Comparing us to Nazi's because we have a trade embargo is a little harsh don't you think? governments do stupid little things like this all the time. It's probably pay back for some behind the scenes diplomatic diss that we'll never know about. I think maybe all of your crying and nazi name calling is very little girl like of you, but i'll cut you some slack because it might just be the cold medicine talking.
Yeah I agree with rhino here, Fly.
And besides, I don't want the Cubans in the tourney. It should be free world vs free world.
And while I'm at it, I don't like the whole world baseball classic crap to begin with. It's going to mess up the whole season.
Hope you get to feeling better.
If it is little diplomatic bullshit like you claim then it is worse than what I thought...plus I didn't call us Nazi's. I said it makes us look that way...why would we do this when we are trying to improve our image? You can't answer that one can you? You also can't tell me how sports has anything to do w/political agendas. It's ignorant and unexplainable why our government would get involved in something that is above and beyond their realm...Perhaps, they should be putting their attention and effort in other venues like war, poverty, natural disasters, etc...maybe it's why they are always screwing up. I'm not pointing the finger at GW or anyone in particular. I'm looking at the bigger picture. Concentrate on foreign and domestic issues, not on a sporting event. Like I said in the post, it makes them look stupid for getting involved at all...
i think we're capable of doing more than one thing at a time. I don't think the commerce dept. denying some kind of exemption or whatever is going to divert attention away from a war. But more importantly, the whole nazi thing is bandied about too much. it almost lessens what they actually did. it's a baseball game, we're not gassing the players, we're just not letting them play. I don't know about our image, but maybe this is part of the plan. Maybe we're trying to look tougher, and this is part of improving our image. i don't even know why we're still talking about this, it's really not even important to anyone except hardcore baseball fans and some cubans.
Actually sports around the world aren't as commercialized as they are here...It is important to most people around the world...and some Cubans. Did you think it wasn't signifigant when Hitler walked out of the Olympics when Jesse Owens won medals...there was no Holocaust at that point so I think it was pretty signifigant. Plus we are using diplomacy to get other countries involved so it is more than just an ordinary baseball game. It would be like the Iraqis telling us that we can't be in the World Cup of soccer. The average American would say, "who are they to tell us we can't play"...oh and we did play them in the last world cup (soccer) and they beat us...as did the Iranians the time before that...so it is a little bigger than the poo poo pash pash that you are making it out to be. Do you think this is possibly why no other countries want to play with us when we go off to war in distant lands...I think it's part of it or do you think there was as many Turkish, German, & Spanish basketball players before the Dream Team swept their original entry into the Olympics. Open your eyes and don't dimish things as insignifigant before you see the broader picture.
ok fly, take it easy. First of all, if these other countries want to base whether or not they help us in a war on a baseball tourney then fuckem. Also, the iraqi's and iranians beat us in soccer? who gives a shit? that sport sucks which is why we lose at it, americans don't like soccer, we barely like hockey. and how can you compare hitler to this situation? hitler walked out because he was a racist fascist supremacist. we didn't say no spics can play, we're just excluding a country that we don't like because of political reasons, a country that we boycott because thier citizens are hostages! and they have thousands of political prisoners who have spent decades in prison under suspicion of maybe saying something negative about castro's beard. and when they get convicted by castro or his cousin the judge, they get shot. So to sum it all up, i don't think it's a big deal that we don't allow the stupid baseball team to play in our tournament, i think it's a big deal that castro won't let them leave and play for the yankees. and if they do leave their families can be killed or tortured or whatever. fuck castro, and fuck the diaz brothers!
Who gives a shit???
Ill tell you who Warlike...the innocent Cuban players and their fans thats who.
Once again Castro can play the matyr and peg us as the big bad bullies that is taking our ball and going home.
It seemed to me that during the recent hurricane season relations were thawing, as Cuba for the first time accepted U.S. aid, and offered (we refused) Cuban medical assitance for our own victims. This strikes me as petty retaliation for Cuba's relationship with Venezuela.
This seems like a stunt Jimmy Carter would pull if he was President, not the act of a compassionite conservative government
It's like Hector says: " Fuck Castro Gomez and Fuck the Diaz Brothers!!!!
Fuck Martinez...Fuck Fuck Mar-Ti-Nez
i think warlike said it best, who gives a shit???
Hey did you guys know Fidel tried out for the Washington Senators in the 1940's? (Pitcher)
