With the buses and the trains not running, if you listen real closely in New York City you can hear something never heard before (least not in these parts). Be very quiet and listen. Can you hear it? Its distant, but if pay real close attention you can hear the death bell tolling for the unions.

Thanks GAC for trying to "enlighten" us however you have your head thoroughly stuck in your ass. The transit strike isnt hurting me (the only NYC Auroran) one bit. First of all I always walk to work, but if I didnt I have the disposable income to afford cabs, car service, limos, helicopters, water taxi , hang-gliding from my roof etc.
This strike hurts the little guy/gal, the same person that unions are supposed to protect. Why? Because they dont wanna play by the same rules as everyone else. If they wanna share in a companies revenue, they should start their own company.
There was a time and place for unions but that time has passed. How would you feel if your childrens teachers went on strike? Lord knows they are arguably more deserving than the municipal bus driver making more than cops and firefighters. There is a trade off here you are not fully comprehending...they get cushy tenured jobs, overtime, decent living wages with benefits, and for that they are expected to act and behave in the best interest of the municipal they are entrusted to. So if they get… Oh let’s say a $2,000 a month full pension when they retire” that would mean (according to your statement) a whopping $1,000 a month retirement (1/2 half)… at the ripe ‘ole age of 55.
So I work at the MTA and I say “hey I have worked for 25 years and I have had it…” so I pull the plug and retire. I get my $1,000 a month (which equals $12,000 a year – far below the poverty level for anyone let alone a soon to be senior) and then living in New York, I realize… Ummmh I can’t even pay my rent/mortgage, utilities, medication, and still have enough to eat on. So I’ll get a job.
Who is going to hire my at the age of 55 years old? Wait… don’t tell me “Wal-Mart” part time at $6.00 an hour working less 20 hours a week. Yea that will work.

Why? Because you have shitty insurance and either you as the boss force your employees to pay for their “fair share” or you as an employee were forced to “share” in the pain of insurance.
You know you might want to get over your jealousy of Unionized Bus Drivers, train conductors and the like. They have what they have thru a process called collective bargaining. The same process our Fire Fighters use, our Police man use, our Transit Authority works uses, as well as millions upon millions of others use.
And at the end of the day in 98% of the time these agreements, you are so mad about, are reached without a strike, without an employer locking anyone out… They are reached by mutual agreement between the Employer and the Members who shake hands and say “we can live with this AGREEMENT for the next number of years.” That’s how the MTA has done it for years and years and years. The Employer and the Workers thru collective bargaining agreed. So when you’re sipping your latea, wringing your hands over other people’s business… you might want to have a little… just a little bit of disdain for the Employer… since they have for years and years wrote a check with their mouth their ass could not cash.

I also live and work on long island, so the strike has no effect on me. have fun walking to work. if you have a job. finally, you make some very ridiculous assumptions. I actually know for a fact that UPS workers pay for some of their health care, and i am sure it is the same for all of the other companies you mentioned. Half of 60k is not 12k. Plus they get social security, which is what most people live on when they retire. The benefits you get by being a MUNICIPAL employee are there because you have to deal with the public. Public employees take their jobs KNOWING that they are not allowed to strike. Otherwise you have anarchy. So they are breaking the law, and 30 thousand people are screwing over 7 million people who rely on them. So you don't care about the children of the 7 million people that the twu is charged with moving around the city? When i say we can replace these people in one day, you assume that means homeless people? When Reagan fired the air traffic controllers, he brought in the military and the retired workers until new people could be properly trained. We could do that again. Of course logistically it would be a nightmare so the mayor and governer will do everything they can to avoid it, but personally, i hope it happens. I don't care about you, or the transit workers who illegally strike and disrupt the lives of 7 million of their fellow citizens. If their children have a shitty christmas it's their own fault. If they get fired and banned for life, they have no one to blame but themselves.

Finally cooler heads have prevailed. negotiations have resumed and Strike is probably over.
The kids of the 7 million riders have finally been considered.
Hopefully all parties resolve their issues and go into christmas without the cloud of extortion.

Besides these guys like a good fight and I bet you would be surprised but you would probably agree with them on most things...they are not cold hearted business people as you assume. They are just politically charged. They care a lot but they would never let you know that...the white collar business world is just as tough as industry...In fact one cannot work without the other and that is as American a tradition as there is...It seemed at points like you had some actual malice in your tone...I hope that isn't the case because these guys are the kind of guys who would die for each other...that is a dangerous person to threaten as I am sure you have friends too...Anyway be good and come back and insult us anytime you want!
