More Honky Less Donkey

Lawrence Elder makes an excellent point in this article that perhaps African-Americans and their leadership could learn alot from the Irish in this country during the mid 1800's. If the Irish had to become white to succeed, then maybe the blacks need to become Irish (then immediately screw over the mexicans)

"One hundred fifty years ago, Manhattan's tens of thousands of Irish seemed mired in poverty and ignorance, destroying themselves through drink, idleness, violence crime and illegitimacy ... An estimated 50,000 Irish prostitutes worked the city in 1850 ... Illegitimacy soared, tens of thousands of abandoned Irish kids roamed the city's streets. Violent Irish gangs fought each other ... but primarily they robbed houses and small businesses. More than half the people arrested in New York in the 1840s and 1850s were Irish ..."

Wife and Kids, the answer is not a more or less issue, one or the other, but a "makes sense" issue. It is about getting the most for our money as taxpayers and either improving or eliminating what does not work. Contracting out at times. You probably dont think its cheaper to bake your own bread every morning, so neither should the government.

I have argued that the failures of Katrina demonstrate not that we need less government because coordinating multiple state disasters "locally" would be impossible. But that the point of the Federal government primarily IS to do what local communitities cannot.

Its an efficiency question. It does not make sense for every state to have its own mini military making their own decisions about war, so we have different layers of military. And so on...

There are many areas of government that are not needed, the billions spent on the administration of the IRS for an example.

Its not about big or small government, I think its about better decisions about SIZE and SCOPE. And really justifying. WHY should the taxpayers have a program or service? Does society benefit? Or just a few? Whats the case for the government doing it or getting involved? Is it more complicated than it has to be, like the tax code? Or is it inadequate like FEMA? Is there another reason-like disease prevention, to have a service that does impact everyone?

Large government must be justified whether you are on the right or the left and it must WORK and be accountable or its a waste of resources. We should all have an issue with that as citizens.

I dont think you can take the FEMA example and say relief efforts always fail. Many dont.

Without the federal government who provides charity? Churches or another bureaucracy. In Lebananon social services were ignored and now Hezbollah runs the show. At least when the government does it you can vote. And be loyal to yourselves and your own interests at least in theory.
