The new controversy in the PC baseball community revolves around being critical of Caribean/Latin ball players. I mentioned in an early post how Bob Feller was attacked on an ESPN radio interview for questioning their understanding of the game's rules. While I was outraged that the interviewer attacked Feller (a 90 year old man) for his views, I don't agree with Feller. My opinion is that most players black, white, or other don't know the rules...Two years ago I saw Jay Payton run across the diamond to get back to first base when he ran on a ball that was caught on the fly...He didn't know that you have to go back and touch the bases that you have passed. Fundamentals in the game are generally overlooked by fans who only care how many rbi's and dingers a player can hit...but the true fans appreciate a guy who knows how to hit the ball to the right side of the field to get a guy in scoring position with no outs...Mets fans still love a guy like Edgardo Alfonzo because he always put the ball in play, knew how many outs there were, etc...And he is from Venezuela so go figure.
The Astros players should be ashamed of themselves. Recently I complained how Pedro wasn't getting any run support (and he still isn't, last night they scored two runs for him but luckily he only gave up one). But what is going on in Houston is even nastier. The 'Stros have been shut out in eight of Clemens starts and in those games his Era is under 1.0 which is awesome. Now I actually hate Clemens and love nothing more then to see this happening to him. In fact when he was on the Yanks, I took great joy in watching him fly his red neck family from city to city in an attempt to garnish his 300th win...Of course he got it eventually (after about five trys) because the Yanks are in no way comparable to the anemic Houston offense. Honestly, you look at the Houston rotation and you wonder how can they ever lose with their big three Clemens, Petite, & Oswalt but they are possibly the most painful team to watch hit...and in that little band box that they play in, they should be scoring tons of runs. This is a stadium that before the scandal was called Enron Field - A.K.A. "Ten Run Field" so there is no excuses for them if they miss the playoffs other than they simply cannot hit with the team that they put on the field. Don't tell me Bagwell is hurt, Biggio is getting older. I don't care. Every team goes through these things and the good ones find a way to win.
On a final note, it has been fascinating to see that we have some real candidates for the Triple Crown. This is the real achievement in baseball for an individual player...To me it is more impressive then no hitters, wins, or simply just leading the league in home runs. Those things to me are usually accomplished by one dimensional players and are impressive but so short lived and soon forgotten. The most interesting part to me is the real contenders for the award Pujols & Lee are just the opposite. They are not only good hitters but also play solid in the field (Lee might be the best fielding first baseman in the NL since Keith Hernandez The Mighty Mexican), undeniably the leader of their respective teams, and are all around good guys. Respectively, they are both in totally different situations however... as Lee plays for the dreadful Cubs who even without the decimating injuries wouldn't have had much of a chance in the Central. And Pujols is on the best all around team in baseball. It is for this reason that I would love to see Derek Lee take it home for Chicago. Their fans are the most loyal in baseball and they have had to endure just one let down after another...but either way it has been a long time since there has been a triple crown winner and it would be nice to see it happen now (sadly, for some reason the home run race with Mark Androstein & Sammy So So guilty of steroid usage garnered more attention then a triple crown race!?!)...and it couldn't happen to any nicer guys. Bring it home boys!

baseball is one of the most boring sports on the planet. but maybe thats just me.
It's not just you...Baseball is like a good book. A novel. You can't just open it in the middle and understand it. You have to delve below the surface and see the history that goes into making it great...People like football because it is like a glossy magazine w/bright colored pictures and shiny images...It's short and easy to understand. It takes up less of your time and there are glossy characters who do outrageous things like T.O. & Randy Moss (which is why baseball is better because if you pull shit like that in baseball some one is likely to put one upside your dome).
Just another note about this subject Rhino...I like football and didn't mean to sound argumentative but Baseball is our game and you are missing it. It has ceased to just be an American sport which is another reason to like it. In footbal, you have mainly black guys and some white quarterbacks and offensive linemen. Basketball is all black guys and a couple of Eastern Europeons. Hockey is ALL white guys. Period. Besides soccer which is also an excellent sport, baseball has more people involved globally than any other sport...You have Japanese guys, Koreans, Mexicans, Dominicans, White guys, brothers...everyone in the world and not only at one position on the field, court or ice. It is our game. The world's game. Ask anyone around the world and they know the Yankees and most know the starting lineup...They don't even know who the Giants are period unless your talking about Barry Bonds and the San Fran Giants. Get on board bro because this has been a good season. Go back to the beginning and learn about the sport that our fathers and their fathers loved long before football was even a twinkle in their bloodshot eyes.
actually, football is more interesting because of the strategy involved, and because it is a true team sport. Baseball is all about the individual. Football is like a chess game, baseball is more like checkers. In baseball, most of the time it's just pitcher vs batter, in football you're calling plays to set up other plays later on, both sides trying to impose their will and force the other side to conform to what they want to do. of course i wouldn't expect you to understand that, you're a mets fan, so you're probably a jets fan as well.
Our sport? you say our sport, then you say "black guys and white QB" then you say japan etc. who exactly are you? who is " our " supposed to mean? are u anti black guys? personally i don't care what the people in korea are into, baseball is boring compared to football. and soccer is the worlds sport, not baseball. Football is by far the best sport in AMERICA, except for nascar i mean.
If you are really into Nascar then I think you proved my point...How is a guy driving a machine a sport...If the guy pulled the machine maybe but that sounds ridiculous...something a football fan might like...but if you don't understand and need reading retention skills, I've heard hooked on phonics works...I was pointing out that baseball isn't played by one race or two...It is a game that is played by all. If you think baseball is just played by a pitcher and hitter then you probably aren't smart enough to understand that the guys in the field actually aren't just standing there to watch. Here's a clue for you...sometimes the guy w/the bat hits the ball and those guys in the uniforms run and try to catch it...Yeah, it's fun. That's right boy they try to catch the ball...Yeah. It's nice and so are you. What's that? Oh I know you are a little slow but maybe if you think real hard you could understand it...What's that? No they don't need lots of padding. If they get hit it just hurts and they have to shake it off. Huh? No the ball is thrown anywhere from 100 mph to 60 mph so you have less than a second to react. No, I don't think a 300 lb Rhino could hit that...but he might eat your dinner if you're not looking.
Oh and I said the real football is a great sport...I think you need to lay off the speed reading classes, slow down, take a ritalin and don't be so sensitive...Oh, what's that boy? You have a crush on the Giant's QB? Which one? Oh, the Bachelor, oh yeah, he's dreamy. I hear he's going to start this year since Eli Manning is afraid and hoit his elbone...Yeah, I know it's tough luck...Looks like another year where the Giants won't make the playoffs...Don't worry there's always next year...
I kind of figured those other guys in the field must do something, i just mostly see them standing around. I do like nascar, a little, but the only athletes are the pit crews, that's why its a MOTOR sport. key word is motor. Next, let me correct you, baseball players do have protection, they wear helmets, JUST IN CASE they get hit, football players where pads because THEY WILL get hit. I will take it easy on you with your jets because you don't want to really start comparing records, that would almost be as bad as comparing your little second fiddle mets to the Great Yankee franchise. No contest.
Second fiddle is still better than being a banjo
Good point donkey
I'd rather be a bagpipe because they get played up and down...mmmm, that's how I like it.
