It's all bad news....
If you read the main stream media, or watch main streamTV news, (yes even fox) the news coming out of Iraq is all bad. (I was going to create a link to some news stories there, but i really don't even think it's necessary). So it always puzzles me when i hear a soldier who comes home and talks about all of the progress we're making, or when i read a patriotic columnist who writes stories about how well things are going. I mean, i know it can't be as bad as the ny slimes says it is, but can the reconstruction really be going well? Is anything really being accomplished? Wouldn't the media have to report something other than cindy sheehan if there was something else to report? Well, the answer to the first two questions is YES, unfortunately the answer to the last question is a no. The media in this country has there own agenda. I'm not a conspiracy theorist, but i can't understand how we haven't heard any good news. So i decided to check out some things for myself. I went to the U.S. Department of Defense website to see if i could get any information, and much to my surprise, i found out we're doing some great things. We're building hospitals, schools, and roads. We've built electric utilities, and erected towers to distribute it. We're buiding or rebuilding water treatment plants, and even creating literacy programs. Most of these basic infrastructure projects haven't been working for decades! So how is it that we hear more about Howard Dean saying that women were better off with Saddam in power with his rape rooms than they are now? Or we hear more about cindy sheehan calling the President of the United States a terrorist than we do about a new hospital? Like I said, I'm not a conspiracy theorist, but it does make you wonder. Check out the links, I will tell you, I was very surprised to read the news, and for those of you who don't trust it, because it's the DOD website, remember that the mainstream media is reading this stuff too, and if it wasn't true they would be all over it. They know there's good news, they just don't want anyone else to know. Why do you think that is?

Journalism 101 Mr Rhino..."If it bleeds it Leads" You can ask the same question about the media's coverage of the Iraqi War/ War on Terror as to why a program such as American Idol draws more of an audience on one night than The History Channel's eight part series on The American Presidency did in its entire run. "On the Record with Greta" wins its time slot every night and all she covers is the Hollaway story in Aruba, is it out of concern...maybe, or perhaps something worse...those fun loving, non war starting Germans have a word for it... schadenfreude: enjoyment obtained from the troubles of others
if it bleeds it leads, that's true, however that doesn't mean it's the only story! I'm not talking about opinion news or news magazines (greta,60mins, etc.) i'm talking about the daily newspapers, and the network, or even cable NEWS programs! Have you seen anything on any news programs, or in any newspaper about how we're building schools, or hospitals? How about the power plants, and water purification plants? I challenge you to find me one article in the slimes, the newspaper of record that tells about the progress we're making.
I decline your challenge because number one that would require me to read the times (im not a big fan of sci-fi / fantasy), and secondly I already know my attempts would prove futile. Im not debating your argument that the msm is slanted, however I think you are missing my point that the "NEWS" has ceased to exist...it is now a packaged product with packaged people reading packaged teleprompters. Maybe you have a more romantic view than I, or perhaps I am more cynical. The major television "NEWS" networks are dead and in their stead are Disney, GE, and Viacom...so they give the people what they want. People like bad news when it doesnt involve them. Why do most people rubberneck at accidents, watch jerry springer, and listen to clay aiken? Huh. As far as the print media is concerned is simple...the are all commies!
Well donkey, you are right not to take my challenge, but you are wrong when you say that the msm gives the people what they want. The decline in readership of all the major newspapers, and viewership of all the news programs, coupled with the explosion of the blogosphere is PROOF that you are wrong. People will always want the jerry springer side shows, but not to the exclusion of the truth!
