What Happens When You Raise The Minimum Wage?

Maximum Unemployment

"young voters may prove to have been the key to Barack Obama's victory. Young voters preferred Obama over John McCain by 68 percent to 30 percent — the highest share of the youth vote obtained by any candidate since exit polls began reporting results by age in 1976, according to CIRCLE, a non-partisan organization that promotes research on the political engagement of Americans between ages 15 and 25." source

Yes, the demographics do not look good for Republicans. The GOP is becoming the party of older white people, particularly southerners, and that just isn't enough people any more to win elections.

My guess is that the Republicans will nominate some crazy white person in 2012, maybe Perry, and then lose big.

at least they're young. you expect young people to be stupid. gary on the other hand is old.

you think young people are regretting it now? i think most of them are still in spin mode for now...except the Jews. I have to believe most Jewish people who voted for Obama would like to have their vote back right now.

sorry. i strayed a little bit there.

perfect point donkey. I did a post on this exact same subject a little while ago. Raise the minimum wage and the people who are hurt the most are the uneducated, young, and minorities.

Common sense and logic always escape the libs like gary. I believe most of the liberal pols know this is true but also realize that most of their constituency is stupid and fooled by the "we're raising minimum wage for the little guy" rhetoric.

Of course libs know. The entire ideology of liberalism is to promise people things. Why do you think they keep extending unemployment benefits, and yet the vast majority of funds for all those "shovel ready" jobs has yet to be dispensed. They dont want to create jobs, they want to herd sheep.

To paraphrase your boy Milt "pay people to be unemployed, you wind up with an awful lot of unemployed people"

Dems in my lifetime have been calling for the death of the Republican Party after the MASSIVE youth vote disparity since Carter, then Clinton, and now Obama. Best thing about young people, is that most of them grow up.

The one thing that might conceivably help Republicans is that soon we will have a lot of old people, as the baby-boomers hit retirement. These voters may, as people tend to do, become more conservative in some ways. Hell, I'm more conservative personally in some ways than I was at 20. But today's conservative movement is not like that of the Eisenhower or Kennedy years. These people are crazy. Birthers, secessionists, angry calls of treason. True there were nuts in the 50's and 60's, and a lot of them during the Clinton years, but they were not the mainstream. Maybe you're too close to see it but the conservative movement of today is crazy, and I don't think tomorrow's old people are going to go with crazy.

The unemployment we are experiencing now has absolutely nothing to do with raising the minimum wage.

many, but of course not all or most, of the shovel ready projects are in the works or are in the process of becoming shovel ready. the people who work on these projects, from the construction workers to the architects engineers and other designers are not the people for whom minimum wage is an issue since they require skilled trades (some union, some non-union, so don't go there) all of whom make far beyond minimum wage.

i disagree with gary regarding people generally becoming more conservative as they get older. i think that's probably the case of well-off people who "got theirs" and don't want it taken away by the government, but for your average joes, as they head into retirement and declining health and realize that social security and medicare are in peril and their own savings have been diminished by the recklessness of a government beholden to big finance and big insurance, they will become more liberal because they will have no choice but to look back and realize that government should have protected their interests and it simply did not. those people will move from red to blue very quickly. i've seen it happen.

I think gary just ripped a bong hit before he wrote his last comment.

Anita, what do you consider an "average joe"?

Dead wrong. Every single time that the minimum wage has been increased, jobs have been lost. Every single time. Im not saying its responsible for all the unemployment but the fact is its responsible for some of it, esp amongst the young, uneducated, and minorities ie the dem base.

But I agree with Anita on her disagreement with Gary, people dont get more conservative as they get older per se, they get more conservative as they smarten up as a result of said aging. Smarten up.

They why are most conservatives so crazy and stupid these days?
