I Love the 80's

About a decade ago(or more) Donkey and I were talking about the government intrusion into Microsoft and thought it was crazy. We were discussing how events around that time made us think of Atlas Shrugged. If we had created The Aurora back then I would have written a post on it.

Last week Donkey re-read George Orwell's 1984. He's been reminding me about the book and lamenting the similarities to what's going on right now in America. I told him to do a post on it.
He didn't and now he seems to be taking a hiatus?

I really wanted him to write that post.....I mean I can't write it....What the hell are we going to do? Will we survive?

Hmmm..... I think we'll be ok..

Our Road to Oceania
Orwell was on to something.

We'll survive. We survived the Bush years, no small accomplishment, and we will survive the Obama years. I do not think that under Obama the Federal government, the military and the intelligence community have suddenly stopped eavesdropping, spying on us, and torturing, but I think things have gotten better.

While you were apparently unconcerned about these things during the Bush years, and also the Patriot Act,the theory of the unitary executive etc, I do share some of your concerns about increasing Federal involvement with the economy and healthcare. Hopefully you conservatives will keep an eye on us. It's too bad most of you are nuts.

Unfortunately Obama as President has, as you say, continued some of the excesses of the Bush government, at least to a degree. It's different when the shoe is on the other foot, isn't it?

I must admit that I have never read Atlas Shrugs or 1984, and I should, at least the latter. You do know Orwell was a lefty right?

gary once again the story has passed right over your head. this is why i truly believe that you are stupid.

you don't have to be an elephant to remember the cries about how bush took a surplus and turned it into record deficits...400 billion in 2008 after 8 years in office.

Now, 8 MONTHS after Obama is elected it's tripled...TRIPLED!

But the shoe IS on the other foot now isn't it? So all of these things are somehow ok. No big stories in the NY Times, no protests by code pink. Cindy Sheehan? all of a sudden she's just a crazy lady not worth any news coverage.

You didn't hear me complaining that Bush was eavesdropping on terrorists and you won't hear me complaining about Obama doing it. You didn't hear me crying that Gitmo was a gulag when Bush was president and you won't hear it from me now. You didn't hear me accusing anyone of torture when Bush was commander in chief and you won't hear it now that Obama is in charge.

But i did hear all those things from you and the media when Bush was president. but i don't hear it now....why?

In case you didn't get it, and you probably didn't...that question was rhetorical. In other words, no need to answer it, i already know.

The budget deficits do concern me but they were not the point of your post, so let's discuss that another time. I do believe that the stimulus was necessary and is working.

I also believe that the government spying on it's citizens is Orwellian. I do believe that justifying torture is Orwellian. I I do criticize Obama for not doing enough to put a halt to such things, but I will not criticize him to the same extent as Bush because he is not as bad. I wish that he would call on the Congress to repeal the Orwellian Patriot Act.

And believe me, if he doesn't get us out of Iraq in 18 months as promised I will be criticizing him. If torture or other illegal treatment of prisoners continues I will be criticizing him.

gary how would you know what is or isn't orwellian if you've never even read any of his books? especially the one that pertains to this post?

You haven't been critical of anything and he has continued ALL of the policies of the Bush administration that you were critical of.

baaaaa.....baaaaaa......

I do not think Obama has continued the use of torture and cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment of prisoners. If that turns out to be wrong, I will criticize him just as strongly as I did Bush. I do criticize Obama. I do not like his continued use of signing statements. I would like to see the Patriot Act repealed, and Obama is not leading the charge on that. So you cannot say that I do not criticize Obama. I just did.
