Proclamation Suspending the Writ of Habeas Corpus
BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA:
A PROCLAMATION
Whereas, it has become necessary to call into service not only volunteers but also portions of the militia of the States by draft in order to suppress the insurrection existing in the United States, and disloyal persons are not adequately restrained by the ordinary processes of law from hindering this measure and from giving aid and comfort in various ways to the insurrection;
Now, therefore, be it ordered, first, that during the existing insurrection and as a necessary measure for suppressing the same, all Rebels and Insurgents, their aiders and abettors within the United States, and all persons discouraging volunteer enlistments, resisting militia drafts, or guilty of any disloyal practice, affording aid and comfort to Rebels against the authority of United States, shall be subject to martial law and liable to trial and punishment by Courts Martial or Military Commission:
Second. That the Writ of Habeas Corpus is suspended in respect to all persons arrested, or who are now, or hereafter during the rebellion shall be, imprisoned in any fort, camp, arsenal, military prison, or other place of confinement by any military authority of by the sentence of any Court Martial or Military Commission.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand, and caused the seal of the United States to be affixed.
Done at the City of Washington this twenty fourth day of September, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty-two, and of the Independence of the United States the 87th.

Lincoln woulda waterboarded? There was a war, there were prisoners. Did Lincoln waterboard or otherwise torture prisoners would be a better question.
President Lincoln instituted the first formal code of conduct for the humane treatment of prisoners of war in 1863. Lincoln's order forbade any form of torture or cruelty, and it became the model for the 1929 Geneva Convention.
For you to ask that question and then come back with a googled response shows how little you know about your country.
My civil war knowledge is skimpy, I admit.
"Should any American soldier be so base and infamous as to injure any prisoner...by such conduct they bring shame, disgrace and ruin to themselves and their country." -- General George Washington, 1775
I guess your knowledge of the French Indian War is pretty skimpy too eh?
Otherwise you certainly wouldnt quote a man whose murder (or assasination in his own words) of an unarmed french officer after he had surrendered is widely considered to have been the catalyst of escalation into full blown war would you?
Would you?
Now go google George Washington French Indian War you jackass. Your lack of knowledge regarding your own country's history is astoundingly pathetic.
You're calling George Washington a murderer? Fucking traitor.
OK, I really had to google this, as you suggested. Here's what I found:
"Assessing the situation, Washington was advised by Half King, a Mingo chief allied to the British, to take a detachment to ambush the French.
... In the resulting Battle of Jumonville Glen, Washington's men killed 10 French soldiers and captured 21, including their commander Ensign Joseph Coulon de Villiers de Jumonville. After the battle, as Washington was interrogating Jumonville, Half King walked up and struck the French officer in the head killing him."

Is this the murder you were talking about?
Not quite.
No point arguing with you about something you admittedly know nothing about but it was widely reported at the time and widely accepted as fact that Washington was the killer.
The point remains the same, you tried to quote a cherry tree lullaby about how being mean to pwisoners is bad and even assuming your google search rebuttal is the absolute truth George Washington when put in the situation that may have been life or death didnt really give two shits about the rights of the prisoner. He did what had to be done. I dont fault him for that. Hell Id have done the same thing.
I google more than one source and they say it was the indian guy while Washington was questioning him. Which put a stop to the interrogation. You'd have done the same thing? Really? Murdered a helpless prisoner? Sets a bad precedent for our prisoners doesn't it?
Well then that settles it, you googled more than one source.
Imagine how Chris Matthews feels about Obama and mulitply that by about a thousand and youll get the history book coverage of Washington, and rightly so I might add. He earned it.
Like I said, it was widely reported at the time and widely accepted as fact that Washington was the killer. In fact it was a valid point of mockery from his political opponents. Think Willie Horton with a powdered wig. Thankfully for America, killing frenchmen with twenty names polls well.
Ive read the actual newspaper coverage of the incident. You googled it. Im gonna go with me on this one.
Well, I'm going to go with the father of our country, you America-hating traitor.
Gary I dont know to break this to you gently, so Ill get straight to the point
Your parents that never really loved you were actually Santa Claus.
Now go stick your head back in the sandpit of ignorance.
More interesting than this silly back and forth is the fact that "half king" was actually the Iroquois version of half a retard. Sebastion Junger didnt find that little tid bit all that humorous.
I wasn't there, maybe Washington lied, maybe the histories I looked at lied. I personally do not believe that Washington would murder a prisoner.
Then dont believe it. The fact remains either way that a prisoner in his charge was murdered, he was the ranking officer, its on him. End of story.
You want to keep your head in the sand and daydream about puppies and rainbows.
I stand up and salute the men in this nation past and present that had to do bad things to make us free and to make us safe. That includes Bush for ordering the smacking around and dousing water on terrorists and even Obama for giving the order to kill Somalians.
.... and dont you even fucking get me started on my main man Aaron Burr.
