More than usual Ive been getting liquored up lately so Ive been laxadaisical on my news viewing, and this story flew under my radar until now, maybe because not unlike Stephen Colbert I dont see color or maybe because its a bogus cause du jour that uses race as an excuse to defend violent racist acts all the while crying racism against whitey.
So......
Hanging a noose from a tree.... bad
Kicking the shit out some kid because of his race.....ok
Lets shoot straight here, hanging a noose is pretty fucked up stuff, but backed by a NEA grant some might consider it artistic expression and if we are to follow the law of the land The United States Constitution then we must at the very least agree that it is protected free speech, whether we like it or not.
That being said, if someone took offense, then there are legal channels to address the situation and putting a beat down on someone isn't one of them, just as it would have been wrong for William Donohue of The Catholic League to crack Mapplethorpe upside the head with a two by four for putting a crucifix in a jar of urine.
Bad taste, depending on the situation may or may not be against the law and usually isnt, but vigilantism and its scorn for legal due process is a crime any way you slice it and no matter how bad the Jenna Six's feeling were hurt they need to be punished accordingly for their crimes against humanity.
Fuck the Jenna Six!

as an alternative: jessie jackson, al sharpton, martin luther king jr., mos def, et al., should all be hauling their rich asses off to new orleans ON A REGULAR BASIS, not just on "anniversaries" to protest the little to nothing that has been done to rebuild the mostly black communities that were blown away or devastated beyond recognition. they should be questioning why the schools aren't opening ... among many, many other things.
but no. katrina relief is so 2005. and sharpton's too busy arguing atheism with christopher hitchens at the NYPL and on hardball.

I'mo disagree with you on this one. Nooses in a tree is fighting symbolism and the dumb crackers that did it deserve everything they got. Eveybody knows that Blacks fight in groups and engage in some serious head kicking and stomping when they do. You will be brain damaged if you survive. In the cracker in Louisiana's case he had nothing to lose.
Here in Oakland have had white people beaten to a bloody pulp by Black's for no reason whatsoever, so why give them a reason?
My friend was a bartender at a restaurant here that used to be very successful before Blacks began to frequent it for happy hour. She said that White women were getting dragged off barstools and kicked to shit by Black men, merely because they resisted the Black guys advances. The restaurant finally had to close.
In fact we have had many restaurants that suffered similar fates. Some started making people pay before they got their food, because you know who would skip out before paying. Once that happened the death knell would chime.
That is why I must disagree. As you say, the noose was fighting symbolism while the head stomping was a criminal act. Did whitey get what he deserved, well if it was indeed him that hung the noose then yeah sure he did, but to hold these thugs up as some sort of Rosa Parks demonstrates just what a mockery the "civil rights movement" has become.
Are there really no positive role models that blacks can rally around or is it just the Rodney Kings OJ's and the Jena Six types that sparks marches.

The Fly and I would frequent an old school Irish Pub in one of the worst sections of Jersey City, when the clientele started to change, it would be safe to say that it wasnt the white women being dragged off barstools and kicked to shit (well unless they acted up) and for the record, they still serve the best Guinness in New Jersey.
I dont give any race a pass or an excuse to be jackasses, but the fifteen minutes of victimhood is running out as the hispanics dont have the same white guilt/fear as most crackas do. Hell even the Indians by and large have got their shit together.

what you're missing is the middle part to the story.
after the noose incident and subsequent protests, a black student was beaten by a group of white students, one of whom ended up being charged with a misdemeanor.
after that, a group of black students were in a convenience store when a white student (who worked there, i think) threatened them with a sawed-off shotgun, apparently in retaliation for the student who plead guilty to the misdemeanor. they wrestled the gun away from him and were charged with second degree robbery!
only then did the black-on-white beating occur, after the white student taunted the black student who got beat up at the party; the black student's friends then beat the white kid.
those students were then charged with attempted *second* *degree* *murder* for the schoolyard brawl!
after the case first got attention for the obvious double standard applied to the white students who beat up the black kid and the black students who beat up the white kid, the charge was lessened to assault with a dangerous weapon.
the weapon? sneakers! tennis shoes!
give me a fuckin break.
this is so clearly an example of the out-of-control, racist criminal justice system that survives in many places in the rural south.

Actually without even realizing it you hit the nail on the head. I didnt know the full story nor do I expect that you and the LA Times to know it either but funny how it works out sometimes upon further research.... my point still stands.

And THATS the crux of the biscuit. To say there is a racial double standard in the judicial system is to oversimplify things in my opinion strictly to divide this Country.
The world isnt fair. Its a shitty thing that some rednecks did what they did but IT DOES NOT JUSTIFY the stomping of a white kid three months later. As they say two wrongs dont make a right. So by your logic Reginald Denny deserved his beatbown bcuz some cops beatdown Rodney King a few months prior.

I never defended whitey my point was that these kids were thugs... end of story and deserve to be punished and yes in my opinion stomping on a guys head isnt by any means a stretch to be considered attempted murder. They are not fucking civil rights heroes.
Is justice always fair ot blind? Hells no! but to rally around these criminals negates the message of the true civil rights movement, that is if there stil is one.
The white kids got supsended for hanging the noose, what does JJ and Sharpton want? for them to be arrested for hate crimes or for the thugs that stomped that kid's head to get a pass?
We aint exactly talking about drinking from the same fountain here, far as Im concerned all parties are fucked up but to justify one groups actions as justifiable because whitey is mean is a crock of shit. Fuck that and fuck the Jena Six.
