Eliot Spitzer Is Just FINE With Me
The only problem is thats its a crock of shit.
This grandstanding buffoon has accomplished naught in his regulatory raindancing. Well that's not entirely true, he actually does quite a bit for the taxpayers of the great state of New York. First and most damaging is the false sense of reform he gives the "little guy". Have no fear Eliot is here to save the day. How many prosecutions does he have, how many of his "cases" have gone to court? Not many I tell ya. See this guys modus operandi is to hold press conferences (fantastic free air time for his gov run) make outlandish charges about the evils of industry and then opens his hand for the eventual payout.
Now this is where it gets interesting. See, although a lawyer..in fact he refers to himself as "The Peoples Lawyers" Uh oh, fifteen minutes to Judge Wapner. Course, three minutes to Wapner. Ten minutes to Wapner. As I was saying this guy is apparently some hotshot attorney, yet in his good judgement he sees it fit to overlook his responsibility as AG, and the staff he has at his command to hire outside private law firms to broker his "deals" with his shakedown victims. Now why would he do something as silly as that? He has an army of legal eagles on state payroll, yet he outsources? Huh! Again I ask why would he do such a thing? Oh thats right. The private law firms he hires work on contingency, claiming upwards of thirty cents on every dollar they broker between Eliot and his victims. If that wasnt bad enough, these same law firms are his biggest donors in his Gov run. The firm Milberg Weiss alone has given him over $100,000, $20k in the last month.
Now if thats not a fucking racket I dont know what is.
In short, Eliot uses the Jesse Jackson method, but instead of threatening boycotts he threatens prosecution, which never comes to fruition. His buddies that broker the deals make hundred and hundreds of millions of dollars, he gets huge contributions to his campaign. The state puts the rest into an "investment fund" meant for the victims of aforementioned (but never prosecuted) corporate fraud, but like lottery cash intended for education it rarely serves its purpose besides being slush. He receives copius amounts of free airtime not held to the equal time rule, and with a monstrous war chest will be a formidable candidate for Gov'nor.
He has driven virtually every industry out of New York State, except Financial and he has his eyes set on destroying that as well. He is a nightmare to this state and to this this country. No reform is ever achieved, no little guys are ever avenged. If he is elected Gov'nor. The once great state of New York will become nothing more than a tourist trap with no viable industry to speak of. Hes just another rich honkey abusing his position to make his buddies richer and to grab some more power for himself. Make no bones about Eliot Spitzer is a bad guy in sheeps clothing (that is, if sheep wore $5000 custom suits)

"When I first became an editor here in 1995," said Times Executive Editor Bill Keller, "somebody upstairs on the business side explained to me the basic business philosophy of the Times…. What most papers do when they want to extend their reach is they go out and interview all the people who don't subscribe and say, 'What would you like?' and then they try to dumb down or spice up their paper to pander to that audience. That's what produced the kind of McNuggetization of a lot of local and regional papers in America."The Times' approach was exactly backward," Keller continued. "What they did is focus on the most loyal subscribers and identify their characteristics. And then they went out and tried to find more people who are like those people." The Times, in other words, sees no need to change itself or to serve its customers' wishes. It is in the business of organizing an audience of like-minded people.
And if that was all there was, i wouldn't really have much of a problem with them. I just wouldn't read it. However the Slimes is a very influential news source. Most nightly news stories are picked up from the times, and we know that most people in this country get their news from the major networks.
So you say that's just one mans opinion, however that's not really the case. In fact it's even worse than what Keller says, it's institutional corruption. It's not "fair and balanced" and they push their liberal anti-American agenda in most stories, and especially in the editorials.
Here's what i mean. The list of organizations chosen by New York Times Company Foundation officials to receive over the years grants of thousands, or tens of thousands of dollars, reads like a roll call of the American left. As of 2003 the amount totaled $6,169,980 (2003).
A study by the Media Research Center found that the New York Times Company Foundation and similar tax-exempt foundations associated with the Washington Post and Los Angeles Times evinced a disturbing pattern of promotion by the papers themselves. Leftwing groups given grants by one newspaper's foundation tended also to get unusually heavy and favorable coverage in the news and opinion pages of that newspaper
All the news that's fit to print??? You do the math.

...and he'll land a six figure endorsement deal. Congratulations to Luke Clausen on winning the 2006 Bassmasters Classic. I was watching some of it on ESPN Sunday morning ( I guess Ive been living in the City too long and was trying to get back to my hilljack ways) and was a little surprised at the amount of sponsorships these guys get. Notice their gear in the picture to the right, barely an inch of their clothing, equipment, and boat is left unscathed by the corporate man. Whatever happened to the days when it was all about a man, his rod, a six pack of Old Milwaukee and the purity of the sport of hunting for a fish to bite on your hook (I always preferred tuna and snapper myself) Is there nothing sacred?

The Great Mayberry In The Sky
The Aurora is saddened to learn of the recent passing of Mr Donald Knotts. Don (along with partner Tim Conway) was recently involved in an investigative reporting expose on The Aurora, and while at this time we are not comfortable retracting any possible slanderous insinuations made, we would like to honor the man for the many services he provided to his Country.
Perhaps not known to many of his fans, Mr Knotts was a decorated veteran of WWII, being awarded the Victory Medal, Philippine Liberation Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal (with 4 bronze service stars), Army Good Conduct Medal, Marksman Badge (with Carbine Bar) and Honorable Service Lapel Pin. For your service The Aurora salutes you.
However perhaps Mr Knotts greatest service may have been in sharing his comedic genius with us. His characters were timeless and he provided laughter to many different generations in roles ranging from Barney Fife, his numerous Disney westerns, an unlikely sex symbol in The Love God?, his brilliance as Mr Furley, and my personal favorite as Shake the boxing manager in "The Prize Fighter". Rest In Peace.

I was trying to avoid this issue, for no other reason than I didnt want to give the Pink Mafia any more publicity, but my hand has been forced. See, I recently suffered an injury, although in peak physical condition the strain of lifting my five year old nephews three pound remote control F-150 was too much for my lower back. I know I know, youre supposed to bend your knees (this will come into play later) So if Ive seemed out of it the last couple weeks its because Ive been hopped up on vikings and skeletons (Vicodin and Skelaxin for all you non junkies out in Auroraland), and if Ive defeated you in verbal combat, take note that I beat you as Rush would say with "half my brain tied behind my back"Now, I work in a very testosterone heavy office enviroment and any weakness is pounced upon like a three legged gazelle in the veldt. Walking in all crooked was all the oppurtunity my colleagues needed to exact their revenge for my years of tormenting them with my lyrical swords. The following scenario played out almost everday, until I broke down and I stabbed someone in the jooglar with a Sharpie.
Jackass: Hey Donkey, what happened?
Donkey: I threw my back out on the half pipe at Killington throwing down 180's
Jackass: So you broke your back?
Donkey: Um no
Jackass: I wish I could quit you Donkey
I havent seen nor do I intend to see this movie. Im more of TnA & TnT movie type of guy. I hate people enough in real life, to actually pay ten bucks to hate fictional folks makes no sense to me. But it did get me thinking about fruity farm hands. Yeah thats right...I said it. Obviously, Hollywood (see: Pink Mafia) has an agenda to push or why else would a movie that was outgrossed by a frickin penguin flick get so much publicity and it'll probaly win a bunch of awards. Gay is the new black I guess. The point of this post is... whats the big deal now? This isnt the first gay cowboy movie (causing the Duke to roll in his grave). So without further rambling, my list of the biggest backdoor banditos in cinema history.
- Robert Redford "The Electric Horseman"
- Billy Crystal "City Slickers"
- Don Johnson "Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man"
- Robert Redford "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid"
- Kevin Costner "Wyatt Earp"
- John Travolta "Urban Cowboy"
- Kurt Russell "Tombstone"
- Emilio Estevez, Kiefer Sutherland, Lou Diamond Phillips, Charlie Sheen, Dermot Mulroney, "Young Guns"
- Tim Conway and Don Knotts "Apple Dumpling Gang"
- Robert Redford "The Horse Whisperer"
If I left anyone out, feel free to add them in the comments section, but so help me Josey Wales if any you jackasses even blaspheme Clint...I'll kill you. So back down George, a bitter pill to swallow, no doubt but if you go to the mat on this one you will lose, because you are wrong no matter your reasoning or logic. UAE may be valueable to you strategically but I think theyll get over it. You went through this with Harriet Myers, and you did the right thing and were able to walk away with only a couple of flesh wounds, so take your lumps and move on.

Perspective
This morning i got some perspective in the Wall Street Journal editorial pages. Now i'm not saying i'm in favor of this deal, i'm saying that we should have some perspective. Especially when you have Hillary Clinton and Bill Frist on the same side of the fence.
The argument of the WSJ is that nothing has changed security wise. The port security will still be handled by the Coast Guard and U.S. Customs, however what they don't mention is that we will have to give our exact security procedures to this company, and this company is owned by the government of Dubai.
Ultimately i think the president will have to back off on his veto threat and i think that's a good thing, but i'm not ready to just condemn him, or the treasury department without learning more.
One more question, just for perspective. Why is it that if we spend too much time looking at Arab men at the airport, hillary and friends say that's racial profiling, it's bigotry, etc. But now they don't want to let this Arab company do business here strictly because they're Arab?
You do the math.......

What Liberal Bias?
"Finally, tonight, the Winter Games. Count me among those who don’t like them and won’t watch them ... Because they’re so trying, maybe over the next three weeks we should all try too. Like, try not to be incredulous when someone attempts to link these games to those of the ancient Greeks who never heard of skating or skiing. So try not to laugh when someone says these are the world’s greatest athletes, despite a paucity of blacks that makes the Winter Games look like a GOP convention. Try not to point out that something’s not really a sport if a pseudo-athlete waits in what’s called a kiss-and-cry area, while some panel of subjective judges decides who won ... So if only to hasten the arrival of the day they’re done, when we can move on to March Madness — for God’s sake, let the games begin."
Now lets see what he had to say about the winter olympics when HE WAS COVERING THEM IN NAGANO.

That's funny, i didn't hear him say anything then? Curious.....
Now what about NBC's David Gregory. He was very upset that the vice president waited 12 hours to inform the white house press corps. about his hunting accident. He called White House spokesman Scott Mclellan a "Jerk"
What about NBC in 1999? When Juanita Broderick came forward and said she was raped by Bill Clinton, NBC waited 4 weeks to air the story, and only did so AFTER Broderick went to the Wall Street Journal to get her story out. She did a 5 hour interview with NBC, they aired 5 minutes.
She went to all of the other magazines too. Time, Newsweek, etc. They didn't run the story until AFTER the Journal ran their story. Yet we have Cheney on the cover of Both of those magazines for a hunting accident, and Newsweek editor (and commie) Jonathan Alter doing a whole peice on Cheney, Brit Hume, and the fact that Cheney waited 12 hours to notify the media.
The strangest thing to me is how puzzled the libs are about the growth of conservative talk radio, and fair and balanced Fox News. When Rush Limbaugh started, he was the ONLY voice out there that didn't have a liberal agenda. Fox is dominant in cable because they're the ONLY fair and balanced cable news station. There are no major publications that don't have a liberal agenda, with the possible exception being the Wall Street Journal.

The Forgotten Presidents
Technically speaking, the first POTUS was Thomas McKean, born of Irish parents (although jaffa bastards). Thats right, the first man to be officially referred to as President of the United States was a donkey (he made up for his fathers past transgressions against Irish Catholics by opposing the Brits) EE-Aw!!! The job he, as well as the other fourteen men that held that position in various titles and incarnations of The Continental Congress was no less pivotal in the formation of this great Country of ours than the "official forty-three"So heres a shout out to those piker Presidents of the past.
Served as the President of the First Continental Congress:

Served as the President of the Second Continental Congress:

Its A Turkish Belly Dance Off
Say it aint so Billy. When last we saw Billy, he was acting as peacekeeper in trying to prevent Derek Z from entering into a deadly dance-off. As Hansel said,"Listen to your friend Billy Zane, hes a cool dude. Hes trying to help you out"
And now its come to this, acting in an foreign funded anti-American film. Et tu BZ? Et tu? Im not saying he does not have the right to do this, nor am I trying to whitewash the war by claiming atrocities dont exist. All Im saying is somewhere someplace a Merman is shedding a tear.
If this movie is a barometer of how the Turks feels about us, perhaps we should reconsider helping them go newtgingrichlear. Just a thought.

The Most Dangerous Game
"Ever since those press photos of Kerry in his brand new LL Bean hunting outfit, I knew I needed a new challenge for my natural born killing instincts, and the dems just aint worthy enough for my Terminator like skills"
When pressed further by The Aurora's investigative reporting team Cheney cited recent polls suggesting that the mainstream media has a disdain for Republicans and the general public's distrust of lawyers, so as he said
"I figured CNN would cut me a little slack when the news hit that I shot not only a Republican, not a Republican Lawyer, but a Republican Lawyer from TEXAS"
The plan apparently backfired when the press learned that he wasnt actually hunting Dan Quayl(e), whose erroneous spelling mishaps of yesteryear have never been forgiven by the J School Elite.
On a side note I am very disappointed to learn the VP had a beer with his lunch, what kind of guy has just one beer? Man up Cheney!

I Am Not A Troll
I am a troglodyte. Troll is so monosyllabic. Trolls are harmless. Think about it, any creature that can be beaten by a billy goat in a battle of wits, that frequents front lawns, or does p.r. work for an online travel agency cant be that threatening. The reason this comes up is that recently I have joined Rhino in his sport of choice, debating the scissorly challenged (I was getting tired of constantly beating up on him in our in house rows), and the accusations of being "trolls" came up. Now being rather new to the wonderful world of algore's internet community, I yahoo'd the term and was shocked and awed by what I read.In Internet terminology, a troll is a person who posts rude or offensive messages on the Internet, such as on online discussion forums
Moi? Rude or offensive?. Gosh dangit Im rude and offensive, but this is ridonkulous. People on both sides have become so isolated in their own hallmark idealologies that any dissenting opinion is censored. That is why we here at The Aurora have an open door policy to all comers (heck half of our team are pinko commie bastards) and that is why we applaud Lily at Lose The Noose. It seems some of their readers have called for the deletion of our comments, and showing true courage of conviction they have opted to keep their forum open. Kudos LTN, we may not agree on much, but y'all run a class act over there on the left. Everybody can learn something from someone, and certainly everybody can learn from me (Im here everyday serving up lessons to suckas free of charge)

Who? Never Heard of Them.
Ok, these guys are confirming that Saddam had WMD and moved them out of the country shortly before we invaded. Will the Bush lied people apologize? Theres more news too.
According to the Duelfer Report, the CIA's 1,500-page account of its intelligence mistakes in Iraq, we did actually find WMD in Iraq. In addition to finding programs and equiptment to build more. Will the Bush lied people apologize?
Now we're hearing about some video tapes of Saddam speaking of attacking us with WMD. I haven't seen the tapes, I have heard that they are authentic, and we will be seeing them soon. We don't know exactly what is on these tapes, but we have a good idea.
I'm wondering..... If these tapes confirm what the president was saying, if they confirm the intent of Saddam to attack us, will the Bush lied people apologize?
Somehow i don't think they will, because for them it's never been about the truth, it's been about their blind hatred for the man who sits in the Whitehouse.

Step Away From The Mic Harry
Is it just me or does anyone else find it hilarious that Sen Harry Reid held a press conference to demand that Cheney hold a press conference."I believe the vice president should hold a press conference to talk about the incident in Texas and the other things," ,said Reid
Whats he gonna say...that he shot a man with buckshot (blood clot) in the face. Well, we already know that Harry.

It's All Fun and Games Until Somebody Gets Nuked
Did anyone hear about the hexagluoride gas at Natanz? Well here's the news that you aren't hearing about. The Iranians are feeding this gas UF-6 into centrifuges. I'm no nuclear scientist, but i hear this is a bad thing. Why? Well maybe because the whack job who's running that country has not only called for death to America, but has repeatedly said he will eliminate Israel. He is now one step closer to having these weapons. What now? What steps do we take?
Iran has been referred to the U.N. Security council, the French and the Russians have asked for talks, the Iranians said no. What next? Do we let them develop these weapons?
What will the reaction be if we take out these reactors? What if Israel does it? My thinking is we need to do it. Ideally we would have a coalition with the British, French, Russians, etc. But either way i think we need to do it. If we wait and the Israeli's do it, the reaction could be devastating.

The New Era of Funny Men?
So here's the question. Is this current crop of funny men better than the original "not ready for prime time" guys? Bill Murray, John Belushi, Dan Akroyd, Eddie Murphy, Chevy Chase, John Candy, Steve Martin. etc.
They did great movies like Caddyshack, Stripes, Trading Places, 48 Hours (not comedy but still great), The Great Outdoors, Uncle Buck, Planes Trains and Automobiles, The Jerk, The Blues Brothers, Fletch, Spies like Us, Funny Farm, etc. Again, I could go on but the question remains, which era is better.
As a side note, i think you have to say that Ben Stiller is the Bill Murray of his era. Probably the best of the group. Also, i don't want you to think i'm forgetting some of the funny men from either era like Rick Moranis, Jim Carey, Mike Meyers, Adam Sandler, etc. It just seems that they're not part of the crew. I'm sure i left out someone's favorite movie, i probably left out some great comedic actors so lets hear it. Which era is better? I think i'm leaning old school (not the movie, the actors) but that could be because i'm old.

The Fightin' Back Irish
"I will speak today about issues arising from the Queer Film Festival and the Vagina Monologues. I will speak not only about these particular events, but also about the deeper issues they raise regarding academic freedom and our character as a Catholic university. Whatever one thinks about these two events, few issues are more important for this community than these. Today and in the discussion of coming weeks we seek above all the deeper principles that take account of academic freedom and our Catholic character–the principles that guide decisions not only about the events currently at issue, but also about others in the future" Rev John I Jenkins, President, University of Notre DameI have no problem with Vaginas or Homosexuals having the freedom to express themselves in any non-violent (violent vaginas will be addressed on my Honeymoon diary post t.b.a) manner they see fit, but since when does a Catholic University have to defend its Catholicism? Arent they entitled to the same freedom of expression, even if that means they oppose promiscuous pre-marital sex and homosexuality and would prefer to not condone it on their Catholic campus, isnt that their "right". Seems to me to be yet another example of the double standard that exists with our "freedoms". Im not gonna sit here and cry about how Christians are being persecuted by the liberal global-secularists, (because two things promoting the social ills in this country in my mind are the "victimization complex" and the "warhol syndrome"...another post another day) Noone seems to mind Catholics when they are doing Catholic things like running schools, hospitals, shelters...coincidence that education, healthcare, and social services are "so called" democratic platforms, but when it comes to their Catholic pro-life, anti same sex marriage, and other "so called" socially 'conservative' or 'Republican' issues that is when there seems to be problem. Makes you think.
Full disclosure: This post was brought to you by a non practicing sinning Catholic school educated former Catholic, and one of the very few Irish sports fan that hates ND.

Taps: The Real Story?
If any of you have ever been to a military funeral in which Taps was played, you already know Taps' sorrow but if not this might give you some insight:
"Here is something every American should know. We in the United States have all heard the haunting song, "Taps". It's the song that gives us that lump in our throats and usually tears in our eyes. But, do you know the story behind the song? If not, I think you will be interested to find out about its humble beginning. Reportedly, it all began in 1862 during the Civil War, when Union Army Captain Robert Ellicombe was with his men near Harrison's Landing in Virginia. The Confederate Army was on the other side of the narrow strip of land. During the night, Captain Ellicombe heard the moans of a soldier who lay severely wounded on the field. Not knowing if it was a Union or Confederate soldier, the Captain decided to risk his life and bring the stricken man back for medical attention. Crawling on his stomach through the gunfire, the Captain reached the stricken soldier and began pulling him toward his encampment. When the Captain finally reached his own lines, he discovered it was actually a Confederate soldier, but the soldier was dead. The Captain lit a lantern and suddenly caught his breath and went numb with shock. In the dim light, he saw the face of the soldier. It was his own son. The boy had been studying music in the South when the war broke out. Without telling his father, the boy enlisted in the Confederate Army. The following morning, heartbroken, the father asked permission of his superiors to give his son a full military burial, despite his enemy status. His request was only partially granted. The Captain had asked if he could have a group of Army band members play a funeral dirge for his son at the funeral.
The request was turned down since the soldier was a Confederate. But, out of respect for the father, they did say they could give him only one musician. The Captain chose a bugler. He asked the bugler to play a series of musical notes he had found on a piece of paper in the pocket of the dead youth's uniform. This wish was granted. The haunting melody, we now know as "Taps" used at military funerals was born. "
The words are:
Day is done, gone the sun,From the hills, from the lake,From the sky.All is well, safely rest,God is nigh.
Go to sleep, peaceful sleep,May the soldier or sailor,God keep.On the land or the deep,Safe in sleep.
Love, good night, Must thou go,When the day, And the nightNeed thee so?All is well. Speedeth allTo their rest.
Fades the light; And afar goeth day, And the stars shineth bright, fare thee well; Day has gone, night is on.
Thanks and praise, for our days,'neath the sun, neath the stars,'neath the sky,as we go, this we know,God is nigh.
I, too, have felt the chills while listening to "Taps" but I have never
seen all the words to the song until now. I didn't even know there was
more than one verse. I also never knew the stories behind the song and
I didn't know if you had either so I thought I'd pass it along. I now
have an even deeper respect for the song than I did before.
Remember those lost and harmed while serving their country
and also those presently serving in the Armed Forces.
Say a short prayer for our soldiers across the world.
"I pledge Allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to
the Republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with Liberty and Justice for all."

I swear i won't tell anyone
Well, that's very modest of you. I'm sure you're very proud of yourself. So lets see, who did we entrust with this top secret information? Oh yeah that's right, Senator Patrick "Leaky" Leahy.
How did Leahy get the nickname "Leaky"? Well i'm glad you asked. In 1985 Leahy threatened in a letter to the CIA to disclose details of a top secret plan to undermine the government of Libya's Moammar Gadhafi. A few weeks later details of the plan found their way into the Wash. Post. Then he leaked a draft report on Iran Contra to NBC. At the time he was vice chairman of the intelligence panel. He was forced to resign in shame, but unfortunately that shame didn't stick!
Don't we all feel better now that Leaky and his pals have been briefed on the anti-terror NSA program? I'm sure we don't have anything to worry about now. Thanks alot Rep. Heather Wilson, R-N.M., you're a great American.......

Time And Place
However...
Jimmy Carter is a disgusting scumbag that lacks class, decency, and more importantly a memory. Is he the only one that doesnt remember the shambles he left this country in as he left office in disgrace, whos only legacy was to become a punchline in jokes about incompetentcy and peanuts.

Detroit Rob City
Is it inconceivable that in the same city that awarded Saddam Hussein the key to their city, that there was tomfoolery afoot? The officiating was atrocious to say the least, and was a fitting end to a horribly called postseason. If you watched the game you know what Im talking about, the touch offensive interference against Darrel Jackson, the phantom hold called against Sean Locklear, the blatantly wrong low block against Hasselbeck (acting as a defensive player), and last but not worst the line judge signaling fourth down on Roethlisberger then hesitating and then calling it a TD (it wasnt, but I agree the video was not conclusive enough to overturn)
Wait a minute why am I complaining again? Big Ben's dive made it 7 - 3 Pittsburgh and gave me the winning numbers for my office football pool for the half. Nevermind. Screw Seattle!
What He Say?
The best part is that he and his ilk dont see the hypocritical irony in their words and in their deeds. We are not animalistic terrorists they say and they are offended by the depiction of them as such in cartoons, yet they reserve the right to attack and firebomb foreign embassies as their course of action? Well doesnt that make them animalistic terrorists???
At which point do we honor our NATO alliance with Denmark? If countries like Syria can not control their crowds and continue to allow violent zealous islamic mobs to attack a close ally, we must assume it as a declaration of war and respond exactly as Denmark did when they sent troops to Afghanistan after the taliban and al-qaeda attacked us.
Happy Birthday!
Congratulations to Fox News on their 10th Anniversary and being the #1 cable news network in America. More importantly, kudos Fox News in trying to keep the big three honest.

My Boy Is Wicked Smart
"Abroad, our nation is committed to a historic long-term goal. We seek the end of tyranny in our world," said Bush. "Some dismiss that goal as misguided idealism. In reality, the future security of America depends upon it."
Intending no disrespect, this is noble-sounding nonsense. Our security rests on U.S. power and will, and not on whether Zimbabwe, Sudan, Syria, Cuba or even China is ruled by tyrants. Our forefathers lived secure in a world of tyrannies by staying out of wars that were none of America's business. As for "the end of tyranny in our world," Mr. President, sorry, that doesn't come in "our world." That comes in the next.
"By allowing radical Islam to work its will, by leaving an assaulted world to fend for itself, we would signal to all that we no longer believe in our own ideals or even in our own courage," said Bush.
But what has done more to radicalize Islam than our invasion of Iraq? Who has done more to empower Islamic radicals than Bush with his clamor for elections across a region radicalized by our own policies? It is one thing to believe in ideals, another to be the prisoner of some democratist ideology.
Bush has come to believe that the absence of democracy is the cause of terror and democracy its cure. But the cause of terror in the Middle East is the perception there that those nations are held in colonial captivity by Americans and their puppet regimes, and that the only way to expel both is to use tactics that have succeeded from Algeria in 1962 to Anbar province in 2005.
Given the franchise, Arab and Islamic peoples from Pakistan to Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, Gaza, the West Bank and Egypt have now voted for candidates with two credentials. They seemed to be devout Muslims, and they appeared dedicated to tossing America out of the region and the Israelis into the sea.

Democracy's skeptics
By Mona Charen
Feb 3, 2006
President Bush is assailed from the left as a rights-violating, murderous warmonger. (Cindy Sheehan: "George Bush still continues his evil rhetoric that he is waging a war on terrorism, and he is really waging a war of terrorism against the world.") And from the right, the president stands accused of pathetic naivete for promoting democracy. Why would anyone want that job?
Is it naive to promote democracy in the Third World? Certainly it can be -- if you treat elections as ends in themselves or imagine that the process of democratization is either easy or inevitable. On the other hand, those who scoff that people living under tyranny lack the habits and discipline to grasp liberty when it is offered may be needlessly pessimistic.
Spain had lived under repressions of various kinds and degrees for centuries when King Juan Carlos shepherded that nation to democracy in the 1970s. So had El Salvador when its people braved bullets and terror from the communists in the 1980s to vote in a centrist democratic government. Japan, after terrorizing the East under a militarist regime in the 1930s and '40s, was able to embrace the democratic model under American tutelage. And among the nations that have inherited the rich Western tradition of human rights and the dignity of the individual, we would certainly have to include Germany. Yet who would cite Germany for the proposition that the Western tradition alone equips men to embrace liberty and reject despotism?
Elections alone do not create democratic societies. Democracies must also, as President Bush noted in his State of the Union speech, respect the rights of minorities, uphold private property, preserve the independence of the judiciary and respect a free press. But elections are a tangible first step that can give a formerly subjugated people the confidence and patience to build a truly free society. The indispensable election is not the first, but the second; because the second establishes the principle that the people are sovereign.
Voters in the Palestinian territories voted for an Islamic extremist movement. It was a free and fair election. Does this invalidate the push for democracy in the Arab world? No. This result was in part the legacy of 30 years of tyranny and kleptocracy by Yasser Arafat. The Palestinians were aching to reject the corrupt reign of Fatah, yet the only vehicle available to express their displeasure was Hamas. Now the key question is: Will there be a second election? Or a third? If so, then Hamas may well be held accountable. If not, it is hard to see how the election we just witnessed makes things any worse. If nothing else, it offers a measure of clarity to the Palestinian/Israeli conflict. Fatah was committed to violence and terror against Israel but claimed not to be. Hamas is at least direct about it. Even the most self-deluded Israeli will have trouble imagining he sees a "partner for peace" in Hamas (though Europe will no doubt sanitize Hamas within a few months and demand that Israel negotiate with them).
Voters in Iran have long since tired of their clerical masters (to put it mildly). Yet their elections have not been free. The contest that brought Ahmadinejad to the presidency was a rigged affair, with the mullahs disqualifying hundreds of candidates (including all the women) who would have sought office. The mullahs cannot permit free elections because their Islamic Republic would be soundly rejected.
The communist junta that controlled Nicaragua between 1979 and 1988 didn't want to permit free elections either. Communists never do. But severe international pressure, specifically from their Central American neighbors, and military pressure from the Contras, forced them to accede. It was the first and last free election in a communist country. The Sandinistas lost big.
For decades, the American government took a benevolent view of the authoritarian (and in some cases totalitarian) governments of the Middle East. They did so in the name of stability. The result was an incubator of terrorism. Democracy will not easily take root in that rocky soil, but the Iraqis and Afghans who proudly display their ink-stained fingers are a rebuke to those who sniff that it's a fool's errand.

Get Yer Red Hot Fascist Dogs
Im walking home from work last night (after a few beers of course) and I have a decision to make, take the subway and avoid the pinko commies "protesting" a block away or jump right into the middle of it, walk home thru Times Square and hear what rhetoric the 'World (Workers Party) Cant Wait' loons are spewing. Turns out it was more of a bake sale than an anti-whatever demonstration. In between the usual Bush Lied Bush Hitler Bush Fascist jibberish I counted no less than 27 pleas for donations within a five minute spa. For example...Commie Speaker: We need to stop Bush and his corporate capitalist greedy pig cronies:
Crowd: Yeah fight the power. No blood for oil!
Commie Speaker: Make sure to make your checks out to World(Workers Party)CantWait.org, credit cards accepted online. Greed is bad fascist lied blood for oil Hitler. Any donations over $100 are tax deductible.
Crowd: Yeah Bush is Hitler
Commie Speaker: And dont forget to pick up your Che and Mao shirts on the way out, buy 2 get 1 half price
What a bunch of tools, but as expected from such fringe groups the media hype is always greater than the turnout. In a city with a population of over eight million people (who voted 85% for Kerry) the most they could muster was no more than two hundred commies. They must have real strong political convictions to be swayed by a light drizzle, or like their beliefs and their non-arguments they arent rain proof and cant hold water.
